The project addresses optimum protocols for the mobile channel resource allocation in conjunction to the optimum transmitter-receiver design.Read moreRead less
Satellite Data Communications for Remote Sensing and Broadband Connectivity. The remote, distributed location of many of Australia's primary industries preclude the use of consumer-oriented terrestrial wireless broadband services. The remote, distributed location of many of Australia's primary industries preclude the use of consumer-oriented terrestrial wireless broadband services. In many instances, satellite communications provides the only feasible means of connectivity for telemetry, supervisory control and data acquisition, tracking and fleet management. Meteorology, remote sensing, irrigation, mining, oil and gas exploration, and fisheries are just a few examples of high-value applications of particular significance to Australia. This project will develop bandwidth efficient satellite communications technologies that greatly reduce cost and pave the way toward new market opportunities for broadband access and telemetry applications. Electromagnetic field strength simulator (ELMO) for RF hazard assessment. There is significant community fear related to exposure to mobile telephone radiation. The computer program ELMO will be designed to accept information about all RF transmitters in the vicinity of cellular telephone towers from an existing database, and to calculate the total field strength. This will allow hazard assessment for both RF technicians working on the tower and adjacent residents.
Delivering guaranteed quality of service over IP networks. The next revolution in the Internet will be to offer end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees, in the form of maximum delay, delay variation and probability of packet loss, or minimum throughput. The next revolution in the Internet will be to offer end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees, in the form of maximum delay, delay variation and probability of packet loss, or minimum throughput. There are no existing techniques capable of delivering end-to-end QoS guarantees. This project will develop credit-based controls, instead of the usual rate-based controls, that can deliver these required QoS guarantees. These QoS guarantees will enable the development and deployment of entirely new services on the Internet. This project will give Australian industry the opportunity to create the next generation Internet. Therefore this project represents a Frontier Technology.Read moreRead less

The introduction of multimedia services for mobile users has resulted in a shortage of satellite spectrum. Spot beam technology is used to provide service in areas of high user density. Adjacent overlapping beams are allocated different frequency bands, however interference from neighbouring beams limits capacity. Multi-User Detection is a technology capable of significantly increasing capacity by frequency re-use in adjacent spot beams. The aim of this project is to investigate receiver design for multi-user spot-beam channels and develop associated synchronisation and channel estimation methods. The outcome will be efficient communications systems supporting higher user populations, without increasing the bandwidth required.Read moreRead less

Innovation Clusters are seen as geographically based and focussed on product development. Recent studies however indicate that technical innovation in geographic clusters is lower than geographically dispersed companies, and that their competitiveness arises from innovations in tailoring products and marketing. The emergence of the ?Grid? enhances the capabilities of ?Virtual? Clusters. Through installation of a Grid Portal and Grid-enabling analysis tools, we export the capabilities of a geographical cluster around Europe's leading computational facility and contrast this with a Virtual Cluster in Australia, where we demonstrate an innovative application of High-Performance Computing to modelling consumer behaviour and managing customer relations.Read moreRead less
