The development of new techniques for partial discharge monitoring and location in high voltage underground power cables. Increased utilization factors have caused a significant increase in the loading of high voltage distribution cables. This increased loading subjects cable insulation to increased stress which can degrade the insulation, cause cable failure and power loss to consumers. Increased utilization factors have caused a significant increase in the loading of high voltage distribution cables. This increased loading subjects cable insulation to increased stress which can degrade the insulation, cause cable failure and power loss to consumers. On-line cable insulation monitoring is required and partial discharge monitoring in cables provides a viable technique, but technical problems have prevented its application in on-line operation.
This project will develop techniques for such on-line monitoring. High frequency electrical sensors will be used to reduce interference and improve signal levels. Both a coarse alarm and a higher sensitivity monitor will be developed.

Australia is the third largest market for termite control, after the USA and Japan. It has been estimated by CSIRO that about one in three Australian houses will be attacked by termites at some stage. Currently, an Australian designed, patented and manufactured product is the only reliable termite detector. This research, developing a novel sensor array and imaging technology, will further consolidate Australia's world leading position in termite detection technology, revolutionise how termite behavioural research will be conducted and significantly increase the world-wide capability in termite control and hence reduce the costs of termite damage. It will deliver significant economic and environmental benefits to Australia.Read moreRead less

To investigate the impact of wind farm noise on surrounding communities, the sound level caused by wind turbines must be accurately measured, which sometimes is hard due to wind induced noise and other interference noise. This project aims to propose a novel compact microphone array solution, where the wind induced noise is attenuated by a specially designed windproof shell first, and then the residual wind induced noise and other interference noise are further filtered out by a specific adaptive noise cancellation algorithm based on the spherical and differential microphone array structure. With the proposed system, the measurement configuration size is expected to be reduced from the current few metres to less than 10 centimetres, and with better accuracy.Read moreRead less

This Project aims to provide new digital asset management tools for city councils to improve city services by utilising new sensing and automated learning technologies for recognising, tracking and auditing of assets. Currently, there are no digital tools available to handle these services. This project proposes new multi-modal sensing and mapping of city asset techniques by building new multi-modal dictionary learning procedures. The new framework will recognise different conditions of city assets in real-time to make decisions. Expected outcomes of this Project include integration and easy access of assets with unique digital identities to help city councils, governments, and navigation services for real-time asset monitoring.Read moreRead less

Future earth-observation satellites require gigabit transmission rates in higher frequency bands. Limitations in the radio frequency spectrum call for spectrally-efficient modulation schemes, which make gigabit data rates particularly challenging. This project aims to design a next-generation transmission scheme for future Ka-Band gigabit satellite downlinks, including novel approaches for dealing with channel effects such as group delay, ripple and non-linear satellite power amplifiers. The design intends to include high-speed signal processing and coding architectures, plus real-time signal synthesis and acquisition to allow realistic performance testing and optimisation with satellite hardware from Thales Alenia Space.Read moreRead less

This project aims to investigate the physical mechanisms of Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) sound generation, and establish an acoustic model that correlates the acoustic signal with other wielding parameters. Key acoustic features and identification algorithms for process monitoring will be explored, and a prototype GMAW process monitoring system developed. GMAW is an arc welding process that is widely used in industry and well suited to automatic welding. The proposed monitoring method is an urgent need identified by industries for improving process control and quality. Auditory cues have been found to be critical for expert welders to adjust the weld process and to maintain quality, but the mechanisms underpinning the process are not well understood. The project will provide significant benefit to the Australian manufacturing industry’s productivity and innovation.Read moreRead less

There is increasing interest in using airborne electromagnetic (AEM) data to explore structural features hidden beneath the earth's surface. At present, 2D images of these features can be built up using approximate 1D models that predict electrical conductivity.
