This research will contribute to a more competitive and innovative economy in two ways. First it will provide a basis for improved public policy to stimulate technology uptake by small business, which is critical for small business growth and innovation. Second, it will identify innovative policies to facilitate the uptake of university research, to enhance the contribution of universities to the economy. The proposed research is original because it focuses on the way in which the technology needs of small firms can be met by existing university knowledge and technologies. Prior research on technology transfer focuses on pushing university research out to industry through university spin-offs or university and large firm linkages.Read moreRead less

This project will contribute to the national priority goal of promoting an innovation culture and economy by providing knowledge with which to improve institutional arrangements for research commercialisation for the purpose of enhancing business innovation and ensuring that publicly fund research results in commercial and social benefits. The research is of particular benefit to regional and rural communities because it adopts a novel system level design which explores the role of KTSs in socioeconomic transformation and across sectors and regions. It therefore moves beyond prior studies which have focused on high technology sectors and regions.Read moreRead less
Maximising diffusion of innovative products on public infrastructure projects: A qualitative management study of open innovation systems. Australia's infrastructure in water, energy, health, education, transport and communication is the platform for our future prosperity and growth. In response to an identified deficit, Australian governments are embarking on major investment programs. Our ability to deliver these programs efficiently and effectively relies heavily on the promotion of innovation ....Maximising diffusion of innovative products on public infrastructure projects: A qualitative management study of open innovation systems. Australia's infrastructure in water, energy, health, education, transport and communication is the platform for our future prosperity and growth. In response to an identified deficit, Australian governments are embarking on major investment programs. Our ability to deliver these programs efficiently and effectively relies heavily on the promotion of innovation in the delivery phase. This study contributes to this major challenge by identifying how diffusion of innovative products can be maximised on infrastructure projects, focusing on knowledge flows within open innovation systems. The study will provide tools to optimise delivery of a world-class and integrated infrastructure network to meet Australia's future social and economic needs.Read moreRead less
Beyond letters, numbers and screens: new basics, technologies, numeracy and early childhood education. This project will create detailed models of the 'New Basics' approach to teaching and learning numeracy using information technologies (IT). The models will provide springboards for action for Queensland and Australian teachers. The project will document how numeracy can be learned through IT to produce students who are more technologically aware and whose numeracy skills are enhanced. Resulting data will inform the research and educational community about the cognitive and social aspects of young children learning numeracy through IT. The findings will be of strategic importance for planning educational opportunities to produce citizens of the 21st century.Read moreRead less

The Australian alumina and aluminium industries contribute over $11 billion export income annually. All refineries, except one, operate in rural areas and are the main economic drivers in these regions. In order to maintain the industry's commitment to reduce the environmental impact of its processes and remain economically sustainable, innovative technologies are required to monitor mercury emissions. The aim of this project is to develop robust sensors, for online monitoring of mercury vapours, that operate under challenging industrial environments. This project will also provide excellent training for young researchers in established international industrial research groups, thereby meeting skill shortages in the Australian resource sector.Read moreRead less
Electromagnetic field strength simulator (ELMO) for RF hazard assessment. There is significant community fear related to exposure to mobile telephone radiation. The computer program ELMO will be designed to accept information about all RF transmitters in the vicinity of cellular telephone towers from an existing database, and to calculate the total field strength. This will allow hazard assessment for both RF technicians working on the tower and adjacent residents.
