The project aims to develop a conceptual framework and algorithms for handling multi-vehicle formation control. Formations of unmanned airborne vehicles are currently used by defence forces and swarms of micro-vehicles are beginning to find increasing use in defence and for civilian emergency response, largely for surveillance purposes. Vehicles must cooperate to achieve a global formation objective, while respecting constraints on sensors, energy, and general mechanical limitations. The project aims to resolve the challenges of deciding what a single vehicle should observe, what and to where it should communicate, and how it should move in relation to what it sees. The conceptual framework developed may also be relevant in guiding future defence acquisitions and civilian applications.Read moreRead less
Precision inertial sensing with cold atoms. Many advances in our technology-driven society rely on precision measurement. The project will provide the Australian industrial and government sectors with new and better inertial sensors to measure acceleration, rotation and gravity. The technology will find application in navigation, defence, mineral exploration, earth science and fundamental physics.
A high flux continuous atom laser. This project aims to create an unprecedented ultra-cold atom source - a high brightness continuous atom laser. Such a device, the atomic analogue of an optical laser, may find near term application in precision inertial sensing based on atom interferometry. The proposed apparatus will utilise new techniques in cutting edge laser cooling and continuous all-optical wave-guiding to dramatically boost the density, collision rate and flux in a guided system. It is expected that the project will allow the study of previously unexplored territory in ultra-cold atom atomic physics.Read moreRead less
Hexagonal boron nitride for deep ultraviolet device applications. This project plans to investigate the growth of an alternative material, hexagonal boron nitride, for use in high performance deep-ultraviolet (UV) light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Deep-UV LEDs are robust and highly portable devices that replace traditional mercury/deuterium-based UV sources, and have applications in water or air sterilisation, photo-dermal therapy, covert communication and bio-chemical agent identification. However, ....Hexagonal boron nitride for deep ultraviolet device applications. However, despite major worldwide effort in the development of aluminium gallium nitride deep-UV LEDs, their efficiency is still extremely low. Understanding the fundamental growth, doping and alloying mechanisms of hexagonal boron nitride will allow us to engineer its properties and create high-efficiency devices.Read moreRead less
Cooperative control of networked systems with constraints. This project aims to address the challenge of networked systems in deploying teams of robotic agents. This project aims to address the challenge of networked systems in deploying teams of robotic agents. Control of the networked system is extremely difficult due to real world constraints imposed on each agent. This project will focus on motion constraints, equipment/capability constraints, and spatial constraints. In addition to theoretical advances, the wider scientific community will benefit directly, because the control algorithms developed are expected to allow straightforward deployment of robotic teams. There are myriad applications for cooperative robotic agents, ranging from surveillance, to environmental monitoring using underwater and aerial drone formations – with an array of benefits and impacts including economic, commercial and societal. The results are intended to ensure and cement Australia’s front-line position in the current technological revolution known as “Industry 4.0”.Read moreRead less
Information consensus and coordination of multiagent systems. Revolutions in information and communication technologies create a complex 'network of everything'. This project will develop advanced control techniques for such networks, to make the nation's power systems safer, to fly formations of unmanned airborne vehicles, and to extract key information from networks of environmental monitoring sensors.

This project aims to establish a national facility for infrared (IR) technologies. The facility will include advanced imaging and spectroscopy facilities as well as unique tools for wafer-scale mapping of IR materials and devices. Combined, the facility will enable new diagnostic capabilities of supersonic combustion processes, aid establishment of wavelength agile integrated photonic chips and provide non-destructive quantitative electro-optical characterisation of IR materials and devices. Establishment of these state-of-the-art capabilities across Australia will have clear benefits in fundamental sciences such as astronomy and quantum information as well as key industry branches in defence, aerospace, communications and security.Read moreRead less
Spatially distributed complex multiagent systems. This project will develop design methodologies for two related classes of technological systems: wireless sensor networks (in particular mobile sensor networks) and formations of mobile robotic agents. These technologies find application today in defence, and will probably become pervasive in the civilian sector.
Robust signal processing theory for synthesis and analysis of spatial wavefields. This project will develop breakthrough signal processing techniques applied to wireless communication, defence and surveillance, entertainment systems, and acoustic imaging. The outcomes will produce new products. The project will also provide high quality research training for gifted postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers.
