    Optimizing The Management Of Osteoarthritis Through Research And Innovation

    Summary
    I will test new treatments aimed at slowing disease progression and reducing pain in osteoarthritis (OA) by targeting specific disease pathways (metabolic factors and inflammation). I will undertake work examining the causes of hip OA where little is known. All required methodologies and resources to undertake this work are available and the trials underpinned by strong scientific rationale. This research program has high potential for translation and for reducing the burden and cost of OA.

    Hearing, social connectedness, and well-being of ageing adults in Australia. Hearing ability declines with age and hearing loss has a fundamental impact on an adult’s ability to communicate and, in turn, socially connect with others. This benchmark study aims to apply innovative, quantitative and qualitative methods to examine the real-world social connections of adults with hearing loss who use or do not use hearing aids. Yet little is known about how having siblings’ impacts on cognitive development of children with ASD. The project intends to longitudinally explore the mechanisms of sibling impact in families with and without a child with ASD. The outcomes will deepen understanding of child development, providing an evidence base for effective interventions to increase child competence and aiming ultimately to reduce the social costs of ASD.

This project aims to create new knowledge and digital tools for older people to be able to assess their home for access and safety, and arrange modifications enabling them to remain in their own home for as long as possible. Most older people wish to remain in their own home but often require home modifications in order to do so, which are traditionally prescribed by occupational therapists. Most older people wish to remain in their own home but often require home modifications in order to do so, which are traditionally prescribed by occupational therapists. The expected outcome of this project includes new digital tools which will enable optimal adaptation of the home environment. This should provide significant social benefits, such as increased safety, independence and support for older people to remain at home, and economic benefits from a reduced need for residential aged care or health services.

Currently available immune stimulants (adjuvants) are often toxic and/or are poorly chemically defined fragments of bacteria or toxins and vary from batch-to-batch. New adjuvants are in high demand; especially to facilitate the use of optimal, but weakly immunogenic, peptide antigens. It is expected that the .... Poly(amino acids) as immune stimulators. It is expected that the proposed project will develop a novel efficient, safe and notably biodegradable self-adjuvanting delivery system that can be fully customised to match an antigen of choice. This foundational research should provide important advances for commercial immune stimulatory applications.
