Malaria claims nearly one million lives each year, mostly children. Although those living in endemic regions can acquire natural immunity, it develops slowly and isn`t completely protective. This project studies the impact of different levels of malaria exposure and age on the development of a protective immune response in children. By understanding the effect of high malaria exposure in the development of immunity it is hoped that new avenues for drug development may be identified.

Autoimmune diseases impose an increasingly large health burden. Treg cells prevents the immune system from attacking “self” offering the promise of using these cells to restore immune balance in autoimmune diseases. However, there are currently no protocols that reliably modify Treg cell numbers. This study will elucidate the mechanisms that govern Treg cell survival and death, revealing potential molecular targets to manipulate the quality and quantity of Treg cell for therapeutic benefit.

Preeclampsia is a dangerous pregnancy complication that can be life-threatening for the mother and fetus. Currently there is no treatment. We are investigating the mother's immune system in essential maternal cardiovascular adaptations necessary for sustain a healthy pregnancy, and how it influences early events of embryo implantation and placental development. This research will improve our understanding of the maternal immune system in pregnancy, and may lead to new treatments options.

In bone marrow transplantation, donor immunity can fight the cancer but can also attack healthy tissues, causing graft-versus-host disease (GVHD). We will use two types of cell therapy to treat GVHD. The first study will use a safety switch called inducible capase 9 (iCasp9) to enable the donor immune cells to be rapidly eliminated if GVHD occurs. The second study will use regulatory T cells to treat patients with chronic GVHD.
