Summary
The development of better intranasal vaccines hinges on the improved understanding of how the immune response is initiated following vaccine delivery into the upper airways. In this project we will provide fundamental understanding of how immune responses to inhaled antigens are regulated; this considerable conceptual advance will lay the foundation for which new intranasally delivered immunotherapies will ultimately emerge.

Summary
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and other autoimmune diseases results from misdirected immune responses that destroy normal body tissues. The ultimate goal of therapeutic strategies is to remove or inactivate the immune cells that attack normal tissues, while leaving other immune cells, for example, those required for protection from infectious diseases and tumours, unaffected. Here we propose to test a new way of turning off inappropriate immune reactions.

Summary
Organ transplantation is a life-saving treatment for end-stage organ failure. However, patients must take immunosuppressive drugs to prevent rejection, a lifetime of which increases the risk of infection and cancer. An alternative to drugs is to manipulate the immune system from within. We discovered a way to boost the immune ‘regulators’ so that they stifle the graft-destroying response. We are optimising this approach with the aim of transplanting organs without long-term immunosuppression.
I am an cellular immunologist determining the mechanisms by which immunity to foreign organisms is generated, how tolerance to self tissues is maintained, and how the immune system iscriminates between foreign organisms and self.
