Understanding And Preventing Physical And Cognitive Decline And Falls In Older People With Dementia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $509,626.00
    Summary
Falls are common in people with dementia and are more likely to result in injury, death and institutionalisation. There is limited evidence that falls can be prevented in this group. Strategies aimed at maintaining independence and preventing decline and falls are urgently needed. This research will a) further our understanding of fall risk and functional decline and b) explore novel fall and decline prevention programs, including the use of technology in older people with dementia.

Systematic Medical Appraisal, Referral And Treatment For Common Mental Disorders In India - SMART Mental Health

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,957,608.00
    Summary
An estimated 150 million Indians have mental health disorders and the vast majority receive no care whatsoever. We have developed a solution to strengthen India's primary healthcare system comprising village-based anti-stigma campaigns, and a workforce strategy that leverages the skills of doctors and non-physician frontline workers through use of mobile health technologies. It will be tested in North and South India in a large-scale trial involving 44,000 people and 20 primary health centres.

Randomised Controlled Trial Of Early Use Of A Simplified Treatment Regimen Incorporating A Half-dose, Three-in-one Blood Pressure Lowering Pill Vs. Usual Care For Improving Hypertension Control In India.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,095,201.00
    Summary
Hypertension affects a large proportion of the Indian population. Effective medications exist to lower blood pressure (BP) and the adverse effects of hypertension. However, complex medication regimes and the need to take multiple drugs can affect patient adherence to drugs, making it difficult to achieve good BP control. This research will investigate whether use of a simplified treatment protocol including a three-in-one BP lowering pill can improve BP control in Indians with hypertension.

Improving The Management Of Diabetes In Pregnancy In Remote Australia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $2,117,449.00
    Summary
This study aims to optimise the management of diabetes in pregnancy (both gestational diabetes and pre-existing type 2 diabetes) and post-partum follow-up of these high risk women in order to reduce the risk of future chronic disease among women and their children. The proposal involves scale-up of successful initiatives that we have developed as part of the NT DIP Partnership, scale-up within the Northern Territory (NT) and to Far North Queensland (FNQ).

PREVention Of Diabetes Through Lifestyle Intervention And Population Studies In Europe And Around The World

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $345,281.00
    Summary
The PREVIEW Study will identify the most efficient lifestyle pattern for the prevention of type-2 diabetes in a population of pre-diabetic overweight or obese individuals. The project comprises two distinct lines of evidence, an intervention study and population studies. The focus will be on diet (specifically protein and glycemic index) and intensity of physical activity, as well as their interaction with the lifestyle factors, habitual stress, sleeping pattern, behavioural, environmental, cult .... Systems Biology To Identify Molecular Targets For Vascular Disease Treatment (SysVasc), With A Focus On Atherosclerotic Plaque Instability

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $450,721.00
    Summary
Heart attacks are caused by rupture of atherosclerotic deposits (plaques) in vessel walls, which results in clot formation ultimately causing vessel occlusion. In collaboration with strong European collaborators, we will use modern high-throughput technologies in a large patient cohort as well as in a newly generated mouse model to discover the causative proteins, genes and their regulators. This will allow identifying individuals at risk and developing novel therapies to prevent heart attacks.

New Nanoparticle Strategies For Efficient Delivery And Controlled Release Into The Brain

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $571,633.00
    Summary
A key challenge for treating neurodegenerative diseases is delivery of drugs across the blood–brain barrier (BBB). This project will develop advanced BBB “nanoshuttles” based upon systematic investigation of BBB penetration mechanisms and near-infrared drug controlled release strategy. These delivery systems may facilitate diagnosis of brain diseases and on-demand release of drug cargos to diseased cells in the brain, offering the potential of a brand new localised therapy for brain diseases.

Establishing The Physiological And Sleep Disruption Characteristics Of Wind Farm Versus Traffic Noise Disturbances In Sleep

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,357,652.00
    Summary
Good sleep is essential for normal daytime functioning and health. Wind farm noise includes audible and unusually low frequency sound components, including infrasound, that could potentially disturb sleep through chronic sleep disruption and/or insomnia. This project will, for the first time, directly evaluate the sleep and physiological disturbance characteristics of wind farm noise compared to traffic noise reproduced in a specialised and carefully controlled laboratory environment.

Investigation Of Zinc Dyshomeostasis Associated With Aging And Dementia-related Disorders Using Novel Nanodiamond-based Markers

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $604,644.00
    Summary
This project will illuminate the fundamental brain changes that lead to age-related cognitive decline by means of newly developed biamarker based on fluorescent nanodiamonds. The expected outcome of this work will be a unique approach to elucidate the source of cognitive decline that will fill a significant unmet need within the community.

Novel Antivirals For The Treatment Of Hendravirus Infection.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $199,227.00
    Summary
Hendravirus outbreaks have become frequent and 7 human cases have been reported, this has resulted in 4 deaths. Currently we have no treatment options. Researchers at Griffith University and the CSIRO have developed a new treatment that attacks the virus by turning off the viral genes at the site of infection. The plan is to treat patients soon after infection to slow or stop the virus and allow patients to recover naturally from this highly lethal disease.
