This project explores complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) university degrees as sites of professional and epistemological claims-making. The emergence of CAM degrees is thought to signify CAM's increased professional status in relation to biomedicine, yet the actual constitution of CAM within the university has not been studied. By identifying the factors influencing the form and content of CAM degrees, this project will gauge the relative autonomy of different CAM modalities and their evolving relation to biomedicine. More broadly, this project will produce a better theoretical framework for understanding the shifting relationship between knowledge, professional autonomy and the university in the context of the health professions.Read moreRead less

This project will investigate differences in how the senior school subjects of mathematics, English and chemistry are 'delivered' in particular settings, despite curricula that are centrally determined and examined. The International Baccaluareate is being adopted by many Australian schools seeking an alternative to state curricula. In current debates over a national curriculum, there has been federal government and media support for the IB as a prototype for policy reform. This project will provide the first documentation on the spread of the IB, its target student/family cohorts, school implementation issues, student experie ....The International Baccalaureate in Australian schools: a sociological case study. The International Baccaluareate is being adopted by many Australian schools seeking an alternative to state curricula. This study will provide education and training systems with valuable data on the effectiveness of this major policy innovation for different student groups. Getting a job: vocationalism, identity formation and schooling in communities at disadvantage. This research will use young people's stories to investigate the barriers and obstacles to getting a job, and from their vantage point, identify the educational, policy and practice contexts that need to be created and more widely sustained in order to assist their career aspirations and life chances.

The growth of VET in Schools has been associated with government policy to promote an innovation culture and economy, to increase secondary retention, and to strengthen transition from school to tertiary study, training and work. Effectiveness of a whole-school intercultural approach aimed at removing barriers to learning for students from non-mainstream backgrounds. This project will involve the study of localising, implementing and evaluating a whole-school intercultural approach that emphasises inclusion, diverse curricula and the monitoring of attitudes. It is anticipated that the approach will remove barriers to learning for non-mainstream students to help to address systemic inequity.
