Summary
Many cancer treatments predispose to bone loss leading to higher risk of fractures, pain and disability and concerns regarding cancer recurrence and unnecessary worry and distress. Current management of bone health in cancer survivors is variable and not well integrated into the overall cancer care. This project aims to improve management of bone health in cancer survivors by incorporating evidence for bone health management into the existing patterns of care of cancer survivors.
This Investigator Grant will transform the way follow-up care is delivered to thousands of cancer survivors who have completed treatment by using a shared-care approach between cancer specialists and GPs. This Grant will shift the paradigm of follow-up survivorship care from predominantly acute to primary care by maximising the involvement of GPs and reduce fragmentation of care. This approach is key to enhancing patient-centred care and system sustainability.

Summary
Although the majority of people with cancer in Australia now survive long-term, little is known about long-term “person-centred outcomes” for cancer survivors - including mental health, disability, pain and quality of life. This project will use data from >70,000 cancer survivors and >190,000 people without cancer from the general population to generate new knowledge on person-centred outcomes, for different cancer types and over time, to inform and improve health and healthcare.

Summary
There is clear evidence that physical activity can reduce the risk of developing bowel cancer and some evidence suggesting it may decrease the risk of a recurrence of bowel cancer. This study will provide reliable evidence as to whether people who participate in a structured physical activity programme after treatment for stage II or III colorectal cancer can increase their likelihood of being alive without a cancer recurrence at three years, compared to those who have standard follow-up.

Summary
Up to 80% of children with cancer survive into adulthood, yet little research has explored the needs of children and their families when a child completes cancer treatment. This project will describe these needs, and plot distress and resilience in families in the first 12 months after cancer treatment ends. The study will identify predictors of positive and negative outcomes after treatment and develop an intervention to reduce distress and enhance resilience in families after childhood cancer.

Summary
Osteonecrosis (bone death) is a debilitating complication seen following chemotherapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia in older children. It potentially could lead to destruction of joint, severely limiting quality of life and ultimately requiring joint replacement surgery. Currently there is no effective medical treatment to manage this. Based on our animal experiments we want to study if Zoledronic acid could prevent severe joint destruction in these children and improve their quality of life.

This research program focuses on investigating genetic, environmental and lifestyle causes of cancer, preventing new cases of cancer, and improving outcomes after a cancer diagnosis, particularly for melanoma and gynaecological cancer, which carry a heavy burden in the Australian population. The research will also inform the best allocation of health system resources for cancer control, and ensure translation of research findings into cancer prevention, clinical practice and policy outcomes.
