The Interface of Oil-in-Water Emulsions. The interface between two immiscible liquids controls many phenomena including the formation and properties of emulsions, the nature of many chemical separation processes and the behaviour of biological systems. There are few methods to study such interfaces and most of these are susceptible to trace contamination by adventitious surfactants, but emulsions with their large surface area avoid this problem. Significant advances are possible with the new Australian technique of electroacoustics, complemented by neutron scattering, nmr, rheological and dielectric response measurements on concentrated emulsions. Our surfactant-free emulsions provide a fundamental breakthrough in such studies, leading to new materials from nanostructures.Read moreRead less
Thin Films of Oxide Ceramics. Aluminium oxide films are used extensively in the Australian industries of Protective & Decorative Coatings (examples include door-knobs and cutting-tools). Improving explosive emulsions by understanding surfactant interactions. This project will design new surfactants that will lead to more cost effective, stable and reliable explosive emulsions. The pressure required to force dispersed phase droplets to coalesce will be measured both directly and by osmotic stress. These parameters have not previously been measured for an inverse emulsion system. The measurements made will be correlated to the structure of the stabilising surfactant enabling new a ....Improving explosive emulsions by understanding surfactant interactions. DNAP is a major supplier of explosive services to mines that produce coal, iron ore and gold for export. The work in this project will lead to more efficient explosives emulsions and allow mining tolower total cost per unit sold. Such improvements in mining efficiencies will have a direct impact of the selling price of the product. Increased export earnings and a greater number of people employed in the industry would be direct results of the successful completion of the work proposed.Read moreRead less
Nanoparticles with designed morphology for surface-coating applications. Significantly improved water-based paints, with zero volatile organic content and organic opacifiers, are highly desirable for environmental and health reasons. The science needed to produce such paints has been persistently elusive. USyd and Dulux will collaborate to achieve these paints by using Australian-developed platform technologies that allow polymer architecture to be controlled at molecular and nanoscale levels. This will give us the means to make structured nanoparticles with morphologies that had been regarded as unachievable, and that are the key to dispensing with harmful ingredients in paints.Read moreRead less
Template-Free Synthesis of Zeolite Nanocrystals and Their Application for Zeolite-Polymer Nanocomposites. A novel method is proposed for template-free synthesis of zeolite nanocrystals, in which polymer hydrogels will be used, in-situ, to control zeolite nucleation and growth from precursor solutions. The as-synthesised and surface modified zeolite nanocrystals will be used to fabricate zeolite-polymer nanocomposites, which will have significant applications in areas including gas separation, ca ....Template-Free Synthesis of Zeolite Nanocrystals and Their Application for Zeolite-Polymer Nanocomposites. The aim of this proposal is to build a cooperative grouping of materials and surface science resources to facilitate world-class research on the nature and behaviour of chemical, semiconductor, environmental, biological and industrial materials. The new Facility will provide state-of-the-art infrastructure necessary for the participating groups to maintain their international reputations, will build stronger research collaborations between the partners, will attract researchers from overseas and will be used by a range of commercial clients. The theme of "surface characterisation" draws together a great diversity of projects being undertaken by the collaborating group comprising around 30 research groups and commercial entities.Read moreRead less
