It will enhance already existing collaboration between the institutions in the areas of: bioactives of biological origin, novel pesticide action, pesticide resistance management and new crop varieties, and will ensure better utilisation of existing excellent facilities within the consortium.

    Development of a novel, non-chemical technique based on the EppoMNPV baculovirus for the control of the lightbrown apple moth. Lightbrown apple moth (LBAM) is a serious pest of many horticultural crops in Australia, costing the economy about $21 M pa. Methods for controlling LBAM have relied on the use of insecticides. However, the pest has developed resistance to a wide range of chemicals used against it. This proposal aims to assess the potential of the EppoMNPV polyhedrosis virus as an alt .... However, the pest has developed resistance to a wide range of chemicals used against it. This proposal aims to assess the potential of the EppoMNPV polyhedrosis virus as an alternative to insecticides for its control. Successful development of the virus will provide an environmentally benign alternative to insecticides that can be used to control LBAM in a range of different circumstances including broadacre and organic production.

The outcomes of the projects supported by these growth facilities will be of economic benefit to the nation by producing new knowledge of plant-insect and plant-pathogen interactions, how plants acquire essential nutrients, and how they respond to environmental stress. The Australian economy relies heavily on agricultural production. The outcomes of the projects supported by these growth facilities will be of economic benefit to the nation by producing new knowledge of plant-insect and plant-pathogen interactions, how plants acquire essential nutrients, and how they respond to environmental stress. The research outcomes will benefit the environment by increasing legume production and so reducing land degradation and risk of nitrate contamination of waterways and lowering the environmental risk from agrochemicals by developing safer strategies for control of pests and diseases. In addition, a number of projects that will benefit from the glasshouse facilities aim to produce healthier and safer foods.

The future of fruit fly control in Australia lies in the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT): it is the only non-pesticide option that can totally eliminate pest populations. Millions of dollars have already been invested to establish an SIT program against Queensland fruit fly (Q-fly) in southern and eastern Australia, but this program is currently largely ineffective due to the poor performance of the mass-reared sterile flies. This project will apply genetic, ecological and technical solutions to the problems facing the current Q-fly control program. Effective control of Q-fly will enhance the international competitiveness of Australia's horticultural industries.

Due to difficulties in accurate identification, we do not know whether these new pest fruit flies are endemic fruit flies that have changed their behaviour, invasions of Queensland fruit fly, or hybrids between them. This project will use DNA microsatellites to distinguish between th .... Fruit fly pests in northwestern Australia: invasion, hybridisation or evolution? In northwestern Australia, recent events suggest that a new and serious fruit fly pest is now present, wher previously none existed. Due to difficulties in accurate identification, we do not know whether these new pest fruit flies are endemic fruit flies that have changed their behaviour, invasions of Queensland fruit fly, or hybrids between them. This project will use DNA microsatellites to distinguish between these possibilities. It will also establish whether the different species involved are actually different species, or should be regarded merely as different races. Such distinctions are important both scientifically and for export quarantine purposes.
