The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) invites you to participate in a short survey about your
interaction with the ARDC and use of our national research infrastructure and services. The survey will take
approximately 5 minutes and is anonymous. It’s open to anyone who uses our digital research infrastructure
services including Reasearch Link Australia.
We will use the information you provide to improve the national research infrastructure and services we
deliver and to report on user satisfaction to the Australian Government’s National Collaborative Research

The export of Chinese architecture to the Third World; China's international role in development. This project examines the global dimension of nation building through an investigation into the export of Chinese architecture to the Third World as part of its overseas aid programs between 1956 and 1989. Australia's bilateral relationship with China is one of our most important, and the overseas aid program is an important aspect of our foreign policy. This research will advance the national interest through: a substantial increase in the knowledge of China's international role in the Third World; evaluation of the cultural significance of overseas aid programs; and conceptual reformulation of the relationship between nation building and global space.Read moreRead less
Reasons and Rationality. The project explains how we assess the truth and falsehood of everyday claims about what people have reason to do. It also explains what legitimizes our practice of praising and blaming people for their success and failure at doing what we think they have reason to do. In so doing it provides a foundation for both our ordinary practice of holding people responsible, and for the more institutionalised counterpart of this ordinary practice in the law.
Xenologies: Discourses on aliens, foreigners and other races in transnational historical contexts. This project will identify and describe some of the ways in which Western societies have classified and characterised other societies. It will retrace the historical contexts under which such classifications have emerged and developed. A major example is the concept of race, which dates from the late-eighteenth century and developed in close association with the historical expansion of European colonialism. The concept of race will be situated in the context of other Western discourses on aliens, foreigners, strangers and the like, a comparative procedure that will enhance scholarly understandings of the phenomena of race, racism and xenophobia.Read moreRead less
Completing the Gallipoli story: Researching Turkish Archives for a More Comprehensive History. Both Australia and Turkey see the Gallipoli Campaign as a defining event. Both Australia and Turkey see the Gallipoli Campaign as a defining event. Australian perceptions of the Campaign are based on C.E.W. Bean's Official History and a number of popular publications. Yet, despite the vast collection of material held in Turkish archives, existing accounts give scant attention to Turkish operations leaving the story incomplete. This project will rectify that imbalance by locating and translating key documents-battlefield reports and signals, War Ministry communications, records of prisoner interrogations, aircraft logs and diaries. The result will be a comprehensive history that will contribute to the deepening relationship between Australia and Turkey as we approach the centenary of the Campaign. Read moreRead less
Causes that make a difference: A philosophical theory of token-causation. Discussions of causation in philosophy and other disciplines raise matters of practical concern: for example, about how to improve causal explanations in economics, how to devise better ways of testing causal hypotheses in medicine, and how to automate procedures for discovering causal relations in agriculture. Discussions of causation in philosophy and other disciplines raise matters of practical concern: for example, about how to improve causal explanations in economics, how to devise better ways of testing causal hypotheses in medicine, and how to automate procedures for discovering causal relations in agriculture. By clarifying the structure of causal concepts, the project will help in the efforts to address these problems, and so contribute indirectly to the national benefits that will accrue from solving them. A central aim of the project is to train several PhD students, the next generation of researchers, in this important field of enquiry.Read moreRead less

A Generic Study of Colette's Short Writing. The study uses "genre" as a key to a literary-historical account of Colette's short writing in its cultural context. The corpus is generically ambiguous, since it first appeared as "articles" in magazines and was later collected in volumes, thus acquiring a more "literary" status as "essays". Taking into account both the conditions of publication and the rhetoric of these pieces, I shall investigate the network of cultural relations in which they parti ....A Generic Study of Colette's Short Writing. The corpus is generically ambiguous, since it first appeared as "articles" in magazines and was later collected in volumes, thus acquiring a more "literary" status as "essays". Taking into account both the conditions of publication and the rhetoric of these pieces, I shall investigate the network of cultural relations in which they participate, and their command of their readership. This will show how Colette made a place for "women's knowledge" in public culture and what that place was.Read moreRead less
A Philosophical Investigation into Conditions of Conceptual Creativity. Australia as a young and striving society depends heavily on innovation and the integration of creative forces. Australia as a young and striving society depends heavily on innovation and the integration of creative forces. Yet creativity can only be understood through a close analysis of its conditions. This philosophical project can contribute directly by investigating paradigm cases of successful groupings of individuals around specific clusters of related problems. It aims at exploring the nature of such structures and conditions that determine the emergence and flourishing of conceptual creativity. Understanding the nexus between creativity, innovation and these groupings is of central importance to the promotion and maintenance of modern societies. It is central to the dynamics of societal processes and enhances creative responses in the realm of e. g. conflict solving.Read moreRead less
Methods of Topology: Boundary, Surface and the Inner/Outer in Kant and Wittgenstein. Ways of 'inclusion' vs. 'exclusion' are of basic and pivotal significance in social and political scenarios, e.g. of establishing identities and conducting intra- and transnational discourses. Ways of 'inclusion' vs. 'exclusion' are of basic and pivotal significance in social and political scenarios, e.g. of establishing identities and conducting intra- and transnational discourses. At the root of these discourses lies a vague and implicit 'metaphysics' of the nature of the 'internal', of distinction and discrimination, fostered by intuitions of alleged privileged access to the 'inner'. The project has direct impact on the de-mystification of these socially central notions, its institutional misapprehensions and cultural implications. The project is a paradigm case of how thorough philosophical analysis can yield concrete results, contributing to an understanding of personal, social and political boundaries and demarcations.Read moreRead less

Memory is studied in many disciplines, at a bewildering variety of levels. Is there any sense in which memory theorists - from neurobiologists to narrative psychologists - are studying the same phenomena? This project constructs a positive framework for understanding diverse research on memory in both cognitive and social sciences. We clarify the conceptual foundations of dynamical systems theory in the sciences of memory. We develop methods for understanding complex interactions and collaborations between brain and environment; and we test naturalistic accounts of autobiographical memory, social memory, and external memory through case studies in cognitive psychology, history, and media theory.Read moreRead less
