This study will establish the feasibility of conducting HCV vaccine trials in IDUs by answering key scientific questions, generating data to inform trial design and evaluation, establishing a partnership between leading international researchers and the peak Australian body for people who inject drugs, and providing the foundation for a global HCV prevention trial network.

The purpose of this study is to define the structural and biomechanical basis responsible for the racial differences in fracture rates between Asians and Caucasians. Following the same biomechanical principles as published in Caucasian males and females, we hypothesise that racial differences in periosteal expansion during aging may contribute, in part, to the racial differences in bone fragility at the spine and hip. A cross-sectional study will be conducted in 500 healthy Chinese men and 500 Chinese women age ranged 18 to 90 years living in Melbourne, Australia. We have recruited larger numbers of Caucasian men and women in our Centre. BMD and bone size will be measured at the spine, hip and total body by using dual x-ray bone densitometer (DXA). Vertebral body width, depth, height, cross-sectional area (CSA), stress (load per unit CSA) and fracture risk index (load-strength) at the third lumbar vertebrae will be measured by PA and lateral scanning. Femoral neck periosteal-endocortical diameter, cortical thickness, cross-section moment of inertia (CSMI), section modulus buckling index will be measured by using hip structural analysis program. Stroke is the third most common cause of death in Australia, and is more common in the older age groups. Because the population most at risk of developing stroke is growing faster than the rest of the population, it is likely that there will be a large increase in the number of strokes occurring in coming years. At 1 year after stroke about one-third of patients have died, a third remain severely disabled and a third recover with minimal disability. In Australia, there is no information on outco ....Stroke is the third most common cause of death in Australia, and is more common in the older age groups. Because the population most at risk of developing stroke is growing faster than the rest of the population, it is likely that there will be a large increase in the number of strokes occurring in coming years. At 1 year after stroke about one-third of patients have died, a third remain severely disabled and a third recover with minimal disability. In Australia, there is no information on outcome beyond 5 years. It is thought that at 10 years after stroke about 70% of patients will have died, and a further 5-10% will have had another nonfatal stroke. The aim of this study is to assess the long-term outcome of patients with stroke. These will include measures of survival, stroke recurrence, and ability to perform usual daily activities. The use of health care and community resources and the associated costs of this will also be assessed. Information on survival patterns, stroke recurrence, disability and costs will be of great value for health service planning. We will analyse mortality from influenza and other causes to estimate the numbers of deaths from other causes that are triggered by influenza in elderly persons, and to test the value of vaccination in preventing those deaths. Our results will help to decide whether an expensive clinical trial is really needed to show the benefit of influenza vaccination on all-cause mortality in the elderly.

These problems impose a major burden on the individuals, their families and society at large. This study attempts to identify whether or not a commonly used drug is safe in these babies or whether it contributes to brain damage in some cases. Many premature babies have difficulty breathing by themselves because their brain does not send regular messages to their lungs telling them to expand. A class of drugs which includes caffeine has been shown to stimulate breathing in babies and has been thought to reduce the amount of support these babies require from a ventilator in the first weeks of life. The safety of these drugs has not been adequately demonstrated in premature babies and there is some evidence from animal studies that they may disrupt the developing brain. Results in human babies are inconclusive and concerns remain regarding the long term effects of caffeine. The question of whether caffeine usage increases the risk of mental retardation or cerebral palsy is a very important one given the almost universal usage of this or similar drugs in premature babies. The present studies will investigate the structure and function of different Omega class glutathione transferases and determine how they interact with arsenic based drugs. These studies will attempt to determine why the toxicity of arsenic varies between individuals and aims to prevent adverse reactions to arsenic containing drugs used in cancer therapy. These studies will also investigate the mechanism by which the inheritance of certain forms of Omega class glutathione transferase can affect the age at-onset of Alzheimer s disease and Parkinson s disease. Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have difficulty with communication, social interaction and intellectual disability. The cause is generally not known although most cases have a genetic basis involving multiple genes and possibly environmental factors. We will study families of children with ASD and carefully characterize features related to ASD in family members. This will help us to understand how ASD is inherited and serve as the basis for the discovery of autism genes.
