This research aims to examine a new method and practice guidelines for detection of early dementia. General practitioners will be screened on their ability to diagnose and manage dementia and to distinguish it from other diseases. Summary
There is a mismatch between people’s use of bowel cancer screening tests through faecal occult blood testing or colonoscopy and their individual risk of bowel cancer. Building on the work of our NHMRC Centre for Research Excellence (CRE) on Optimising Colorectal Cancer Screening, this trial will test the effect of an electronic risk assessment tool, implemented in general practice, on use of the most appropriate screening test for bowel cancer based on a person’s risk of developing the condition
Cervical Screening Participation And Outcomes For Indigenous Australian Women

Summary
Cervical cancer is much more common among Indigenous than other Australian women, however little is known about their cervical screening participation or outcomes. This study will use Pap Test Registers and other data sources to compare screening participation and outcomes for Indigenous and non-Indigenous women, and investigate whether cervical cancer incidence has decreased for Indigenous women in recent years, as it has done for non-Indigenous women in Australia.

This study aims to assess the effects of HIV infection on the brain in Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Progressive neurological dysfunction is common in HIV infection and the early detection of such dysfunction is crucial in informing treatment decisions. The need for a simple, valid and sensitive screening method for HIV associated neurological problems in Australians from CALD backgrounds is of paramount importance.

Cervical cancer is a devastating but preventable disease and 1 in 5 cases of cervical cancer in the world occur in India. We will work with women, communities, and health services in two States of India (Tamil Nadu and Mizoram) to design a woman friendly approach to prevent cervical cancer. This project brings together international and Indian experts to overcome current barriers to cervical screening by using a newer, more effective way of screening to reach underserved women and save lives.

During outbreaks of such viral gastroenteritis, large numbers of people may become ill. The viruses may be transmitted in contaminated food or drink, or passed from person to person. Outbreaks have been associated with hospital wards, nursing homes, school camps, cruise ships and airline flights. The viruses causing these outbreaks are human caliciviruses. During outbreaks of such viral gastroenteritis, large numbers of people may become ill. The viruses may be transmitted in contaminated food or drink, or passed from person to person. Outbreaks have been associated with hospital wards, nursing homes, school camps, cruise ships and airline flights. The viruses causing these outbreaks are human caliciviruses. They have a structural resemblance to the rabbit virus recently released in Australia, but possess an alternative host range, and they produce different symptoms in the infected host. The human caliciviruses are difficult to study in the laboratory. They do not replicate in cell culture systems and no animal is known to show symptoms of infection. In this project, the techniques of genetic engineering are being used to develop diagnostic reagents for the viruses, and to study the functions of the proteins encoded by the viral genes. In the longer term, it may be feasible to develop vaccines and drugs against these viruses, but first it is necessary to discover how many types are circulating world-wide and in Australia, and to identify potential targets for antiviral drugs during virus replication.Read moreRead less

Summary
The Australian Heart Eye Study will determine whether vessel signs from the retina at the back of the eye are an independent marker of heart disease as assessed by a coronary angiogram. New imaging techniques permit a rapid assessment of these signs. This project could lead to the development of an innovative, non-invasive test that could be used to screen people for the risk of coronary heart disease, in addition to traditional risk factors like blood pressure, smoking, cholesterol and obesity.
