This project aims to address the unresolved evolutionary origins of bat echolocation. Using a unique combination of development, evolution and novel engineering testing, this project expects to generate new insights into how features of the skull have evolved to allow bats to use their senses to interact with the environment. Expected outcomes include the identification of skull features that are unique to echolocating bats and tests of how these relate to the frequency and detection range of sounds produced. Benefits include improved conservation planning for urban and rural bat populations, and potential commercial advances through engineering applications that mimic the biological process of echolocation. Long noncoding RNAs and their regulatory roles in epigenetic control of gene expression in plants. Epigenetic control of gene expression plays a critical role in development, environmental adaptation, stress response and disease resistance in plants, but its molecular basis remains largely unknown. Epigenetic control of gene expression plays a critical role in development, environmental adaptation, stress response and disease resistance in plants, but its molecular basis remains largely unknown. The proposed study should contribute to the emerging field of epigenetics by discovering new regulatory noncoding RNAs involved in epigenetic mechanisms in plants. These new discoveries could potentially provide new opportunities and platforms for improving the performance, yield and quality of crop plants. The proposed study is therefore consistent with the national research priority goals such as breakthrough science, frontier technologies and promoting an innovation culture.Read moreRead less
Harmonic analysis in rough contexts. Harmonic analysis is a set of mathematical techniques aimed at decomposing complex signals into simple pieces in a way that is reminiscent of the decomposition of sounds into harmonics. It is highly efficient in analysing signals in homogeneous media such as wave propagation through the air that underpins wireless communication technology. However, wave propagation through inhomogeneous media, such as the human body in medical imaging or the Earth in geophysical imaging, is much harder to model. Phenomena with random components, as considered in finance for instance, are also problematic. This project is an important part of an intense international research effort to develop harmonic analysis in such rough contexts.Read moreRead less
Plant immunity to fungal and bacterial pathogens. Since 2003, the Australian wheat crop has been threatened by a continuing stripe rust epidemic, which has required an additional production expense of at least $100 million per annum in fungicides. This Australian National University (ANU) - Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) joint proposal aims to exploit the next-generation genome sequencing and associated bioinformatic and proteomic methods which are poised to revolutionise biology to investigate the wheat-fungus interaction. We will develop new effective approaches for environmentally benign stripe rust control based on new knowledge about how this fungus causes disease and avoids the wheat's immune surveillance system.Read moreRead less
The Spectral Theory and Harmonic Analysis of Geometric Differential Operators. The project will involve mathematical research of the highest international standard in two very active and far-reaching field of mathematics: quantum chaos, and harmonic analysis. Progress in these fields will have implications in areas such as communications technology (e.g. image compression), quantum theory, and mathematical analysis (e.g. partial differential equations).
Operator algebras as models for dynamics and geometry. Operator algebra is the mathematical theory which describes quantum physics and predicts how quantum systems will behave. Through this project, the researcher's recent discoveries in operator algebra will give us new insight into the dynamics and geometry - that is, the behaviour and shape - of the quantum world.

Mental disorders such as depression are a major cause of disability. Improving mental health can increase productivity and workforce participation. However, the psychosocial quality of work is a factor that overlays the relationship between work and health. Poor quality work (for example, unreasonable time pressure, insecurity) increases the risk of poor mental health, absenteeism, and exit from the workforce. This project will analyse data following people over time to investigate the long-term health and employment consequences of poor psychosocial job quality, and consider the special case of mature age workers. It will identify those individuals at greatest risk, and factors that can buffer against the adverse effects of poor quality work.Read moreRead less
Early evolution of the endomesoderm gene regulatory network. This project aims to unravel the endomesoderm gene network’s evolutionary history by identifying its conserved components’ target genes in the calcareous sponge Sycon. Little is known about the evolutionary origin of the developmental gene regulatory networks active in the development of all Eumetazoans (animals with nerves and digestive systems). Sponges are key models to study the transition from protists to eumetazoans, and gene expression data supports homology between sponge and eumetazoan tissues and body plans. This project could illuminate the evolutionary history of the animal body plan.Read moreRead less
Reading the isotopic archive: carbon and oxygen stable isotope ratios as recorders of plant physiological processes. This project will investigate how plant physiological processes are reflected in stable isotope ratios of carbon and oxygen in plant tissues. Results will contribute towards a mechanistic understanding of the processes that cause isotopic modifications, thereby enabling an improved interpretation of naturally occurring stable isotope signals.
Regularisation methods of inverse problems: theory and computation. This project aims to investigate regularisation methods for inverse problems which are ill-posed in the sense that their solutions depend discontinuously on the data. When only noisy data is available, regularisation methods define stable approximate solutions by replacing the original inverse problem with a family of well-posed neighbouring problems monitored by a so-called regularisation parameter. The project expects to develop purely data-driven rules to choose the regularisation parameter and show how they work in theory, and in practice. It will also develop convex framework, acceleration strategies as well as preconditioning and splitting ideas to design efficient regularisation solvers.Read moreRead less
