Summary
Real-time control and data analysis of remote synchrotron microprobe experiments. A Canadian-Australian collaboration to design and construct sister synchrotron microdiffraction fluorescence probes (mDFP) commenced in 2004. The Canadian mDFP will be available in the first half of 2006, at least two years prior to the sister facility at the Australian Synchrotron. A Canadian-Australian collaboration to design and construct sister synchrotron microdiffraction fluorescence probes (mDFP) commenced in 2004. The Canadian mDFP will be available in the first half of 2006, at least two years prior to the sister facility at the Australian Synchrotron. The proposed project will extend this collaboration to develop a system for remote control of mDFP experiments, incorporating real-time data analysis and 3D visualization. This system will enable Australian scientists to use the Canadian mDFP, and subsequently the Australian Synchrotron mDFP, from their home institutions. The resulting flexibility of scheduling and alleviation of downtime for travel will be particularly beneficial for industry users.Read moreRead less

This proposal aims to develop Indigenist Health Humanities as a new and innovative field of inquiry, building an intellectual collective capable of bridging the knowledge gap that hinders current efforts to close the gap in Indigenous health inequality. Bringing together health and the humanities through the particularity of Indigenous scholarship, a deeper understanding of the human experience of health will be developed alongside a greater understanding of the enablers to building a transdisciplinary collective of Indigenous health researchers. The potential benefits include a more sustainable, relational and ethical approach to advancing new knowledge, advancing research careers and advancing health outcomes for Indigenous people. Earth soundscapes: A human-computer approach to environmental sound analysis. This project aims to visualise and analyse big sound data, to detect patterns of animal and bird calls at different temporal and spatial scales. Eco-acoustics are important for scaling environmental monitoring; since the resulting big sound data is opaque and its fully automated analysis is intractable, human-computer methods are needed to interpret the data. Eco-acoustics are important for scaling environmental monitoring; since the resulting big sound data is opaque and its fully automated analysis is intractable, human-computer methods are needed to interpret the data. The project expects to deliver multi-scale sound visualisation, end-user analytic tools and annotation and management methods so people can monitor the environment with insight and accuracy.Read moreRead less
Efficient Processing of Complex Spatial Queries. Similarity search and join are two of the most popular yet complex queiries in spatial databases. They are also two of the major spatial data analysis paradigms. To complement the existing techniques, this project aims to investigate a more complex and important form of these two problems, and to develop novel framework to approach the proposed problems. A Formal Approach to Resource Allocation in Service Oriented Marketplaces. There was a strong opinion at the 2004 World Economic Forum that interorganisational computing was a major factor in productivity improvements underpinning continuing economic growth in the developed world, and will continue to be so for the foreseeable future. The results of the proposed research are directed to advanced systems of this type, and will add momentum to Australia's Information Technology research community. ....A Formal Approach to Resource Allocation in Service Oriented Marketplaces. The results of the proposed research are directed to advanced systems of this type, and will add momentum to Australia's Information Technology research community. Increased international recognition will positively impact on future interactions with the service composition research groups in Europe and the USA.Read moreRead less
Information support tools for the trauma patient pathway. Processes such as critical supply chain management, disaster management, and trauma patient pathways need people, resources, and information to be smoothly transferred between jurisdictions, but problems can occur at each handover. This project focuses on the prehospital to hospital patient pathway and aims to develop technologies, devices, and displays to support more effective handover of patients between jurisdictions. The project will conduct field research, design activities, and simulation-based evaluation of prototypes with healthcare professionals. Expected outcomes are designs, technologies, and guidelines that will generalise to other multi-jurisdictional processes. Benefits are safer and more efficient handover processes.Read moreRead less

This project aims to reconnect people with nature through new technology. Events in nature occur at times, places and scales that are hard to witness, leading to human disconnection from nature. This project proposes to address this issue by researching and designing new low-cost devices that combine environmental sensors with new interfaces to reveal local nature in parks and gardens in calm, engaging ways within and between homes in medium and high density environments. Outcomes will include new connected devices, playful interfaces and social sharing mechanisms, an evaluation with local groups, and a new theory of technology supported human-nature interaction. Benefits will include better community connection to nature, engagement in local citizen science, environmental initiatives and novel monitoring services and products.Read moreRead less
