In 2001, the Victorian government announced that it would contribute $157M towards the establishment of a national synchrotron facility, becoming operational in 2007. The research performed at such a facility is exceedingly diverse, and often the underpinning technology is the only point of contact for users. A vibrant and productive facility requires a transparent interface between the scientist and the technology. This Network will set up the communication channels within the user base, and between the users and the facility development program.Read moreRead less
Structural and Electronic Properties of Layered Bismuth Oxides. A systematic study of the role of cation substitutions and temperature on the structural and electronic properties of a number of layered bismuth oxides will undertaken with the aim of developing improved ferroelectric materials for use in electronic devices.
Allosteric regulation, molecular structure and function of transglutaminase 2. With Australia's ageing population, we can expect to see increasing prevalence of pathologies such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease, and cataracts. The ubiquitous enzyme transglutaminase 2 (TG2) has been implicated in all of these age-related diseases, as well as in chronic disorders such as coeliac disease and diabetes, and may contribute in a positive way to wound healing. Understanding how TG2 is activated and inactivated, and how it selects its targets, will be a critical addition to current knowledge of this enzyme, and will be an essential prerequisite for the development of TG2-targetted drugs and other TG2-related therapies.Read moreRead less

The ultimate aim of this project is to identify high performance, multiferroic magnetoelectrics suitable for use in the next generation electronic devices. These oxides exhibit a strong interaction between the polarisation and magnetic response. Understanding the factors that control the response of such materials to applied magnetic and electric fields is critical to the discovery, optimization and, ultimately, industrial exploitation of such materials. Through comprehensive experimental and theoretical studies of a number of such materials this project will enhance the ability of industry to develop new and improved materials. Development of advanced materials is a designated National Research Priority area. Read moreRead less

The aim is to design nanosized TiO2 photocatalsysts with superior photoactivity using various synthesis paths. Nanosized TiO2 particles will be prepared using sol-gel, aerosol and plasma processing, their physical and chemical properties will be closely studied and their photocatalytic ability will be assessed. Such tailor-made photocatalysts have significant commercial potential value, as they would be highly suitable for the photooxidation of organic compounds and the photoreduction of metal ions in wastewaters. Findings from this work will pave the way for a "green" technology such as photocatalysis to become more efficient and hence a competitive alternative to conventional water treatment methods.Read moreRead less

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is an extremely important synchrotron radiation tool for determining the local structure around an X-ray absorbing atom. This has many applications in the study of materials, minerals, metal complexes, and metalloproteins and can often be used to obtain information that is not available by other techniques, because structural information can be obtained in the solid or solution state and in mixtures. The current proposal is aimed at introducing new technology into the Australian National Beamline Facility that will greatly improve the quality and quantity of experiments that can be performed and extend studies into dilute solutions and protein samples.Read moreRead less
