The mission of the Centre is to stimulate research in mathematical and statistical modelling of complex systems and to encourage cross-fertilisation of ideas and techniques. The specific objectives are
- to formulate and analyse mathematical and statistical models for natural and artificial complex systems,
- to use these models to develop an understanding of the behaviour of these systems
- to incorporate this understanding into strategies for management and control.Read moreRead less

This project has direct relevance to understanding the growth of viral infections, and therefore has possible practical applications in disease research and control. Examples of these are emerging diseases in humans such as those caused by HIV-1, SARS coronavirus and Dengue virus, which cause considerable human suffering throughout the world. A major part of current research into these diseases involves attempts to model the evolutionary genetics and dynamics of virus populations in order to understand how to control epidemics, develop vaccines and design drugs. The research program is designed to provide new computational modelling tools for this purpose, which may have wider applications as well.

Interpretative and predictive tools are needed for the comprehensive understanding of directed cell migration in the medical sciences. Mathematical models and modelling methodologies developed in this project will make a significant contribution to the investigation of cell migration and the testing and generation of hypotheses. Such models are needed to understand observed cellular patterns. This project will contribute to knowledge of normal and abnormal developmental processes, especially in embryonic growth. Understanding these processes should lead to prediction and treatment of congenital disorders and contribute to a healthy start to life.Read moreRead less

This Research Hub will harness the strengths of data-based and physics-based sciences to transform the operation of Australia’s offshore energy infrastructure. This essential research will create, use and embed observations of past and ongoing activity to engineer tools and approaches necessary to enhance our understanding of the offshore environment, optimise critical operations for existing facilities (including installation and maintenance), and efficiently design future infrastructure. The integrated multidisciplinary approach will not only help Operators achieve high productivity through low downtime and optimised maintenance, but also demonstrate, in research and industry, the transformative potential of digital engineering.Read moreRead less
New Methods in Theory and Cosmic Applications of Spherical Random Fields. This project aims to investigate and model spherical random fields which are described as solutions of stochastic differential equations on a sphere or a ball. The project plans to study properties and develop spectral analysis of these solutions. This project aims to investigate and model spherical random fields which are described as solutions of stochastic differential equations on a sphere or a ball. The project plans to study properties and develop spectral analysis of these solutions. It then plans to use the obtained theoretical results to construct new methods for numerical approximation and statistical estimation of these random fields. In particular, it plans to develop novel asymptotic and statistical methodology for tensor random fields. The project will apply the results to model and analyse cosmic microwave background data. Expected outcomes will improve the accuracy in determining cosmological parameters and provide novel tools for better understanding of the universe during its early stages.Read moreRead less

The integrity of the financial system is constantly under stress because of the development of ever more complex financial instruments, structures and strategies, and the associated research technologies that continues to accelerate worldwide. FIRN's vision is to harness the considerable strengths of Australia's internationally renowned finance, accounting and economics researchers into a research agenda to address issues concerning the integrity of the financial system. It will enable Australian research in this area to match the scale and impact of similar research in other major international financial centres, and play an essential role in placing Australia among the world's leaders in financial markets related research.Read moreRead less
Random network models with applications in biology. Complex biological systems consist of a large number of interacting agents or components, and so can be studied using mathematical random network models. We aim to gain deeper insights into the laws emerging as the random networks evolve in time. This can help us to deal with dangerous disease epidemics and better understand the human brain.
The evolution of dispersal on range edges. The rate at which an invasive species spreads, and the ability of a native species to adapt to environmental change, are both contingent on the dispersal ability of the species. Dispersal ability, however, evolves rapidly on the edge of a species' range. The rapid evolution of dispersal, therefore, determines the eventual range-limits of invasive species, as well as of native species responding to changing conditions. This research will provide tools ....The evolution of dispersal on range edges. Dispersal ability, however, evolves rapidly on the edge of a species' range. The rapid evolution of dispersal, therefore, determines the eventual range-limits of invasive species, as well as of native species responding to changing conditions. This research will provide tools with which to predict the direction and rate of dispersal evolution on range-edges. The results of this work will, thus, massively facilitate management of invasive species and climate change.Read moreRead less
Congestion control of networks: a unified stochastic framework. Systems such as the internet, wireless networks and the power grid require efficient allocation of shared resources. This research will develop ways to reduce delays in the internet and allow for growth in the power grid, without requiring additional infrastructure.
Random Discrete Structures: Approximations and Applications. The behaviour of many real world systems can be modelled by random discrete structures evolving over time. For example, the sizes of populations of frogs in some close patches of forests can be modelled as interacting random processes. The behaviour of many real world systems can be modelled by random discrete structures evolving over time. For example, the sizes of populations of frogs in some close patches of forests can be modelled as interacting random processes. The aim of the project is to investigate large discrete random structures that arise from real world application in areas such as biology, complex networks and insurance. The proposed project is at the interface of mathematics and 'big data' applications and so the work of the project aims to provide theoretical and heuristic underpinnings useful in the algorithms and techniques of practitioners. Understanding the applications in the project requires new, broadly applicable methods and developing such is a complementary aim.Read moreRead less
