The Big Australian Speech Corpus: An audio-visual speech corpus of Australian English. Contemporary speech science and technology are driven by the availability of large speech corpora. While audio databases exist for languages spoken in America, Europe and Japan, there is currently no large auditory-visual database of spoken language, and certainly not one for Australian English. Intimacy and Violence in Anglo Pacific Rim settler colonial societies. Violence and intimacy were both fundamental to the formation of settler colonial societies, yet we know surprisingly little of how they were connected. Through a large-scale collaboration of leading scholars, this project aims to produce the first transnational analysis of intimacy and violence as key, intertwined vectors in the development of settler societies across the colonial Anglophone Pacific Rim. Through a programme of dedicated conferences and symposia, new digital resources, publications, and specialist postgraduate mentoring, Network management will mobilise existing strengths to build up national and international research partnerships in key emerging areas of scholarly enquiry. The origins of modern Australian systems of justice are derived from institutions and cultures developed in Britain, and this project will contribute a deeper understanding of their nature and provenance. It will illuminate the roots of the modern trial as an instrument of governance that involves largely symbolic, rather than substantive, popular participation, and trace its equally significant role as a ....The Courtroom, Lawyers and the Press: Negotiating Justice in the Age of the Public Sphere. This project will analyse the extraordinary success of MONA (Museum of New and Old Art) as an art gallery and use this information to identify, stimulate and sustain innovative collaborations between MONA, the cities of Hobart and Glenorchy, and the state of Tasmania, aimed at maximising visitor numbers to the state from art related tourism.
The Laboratory of Modernity: Knowledge Formation and the Australian Settler Colonies (1788-1900). Colonial Australia was a laboratory in which European ideas could be tested, raw data collected, and social experiments trialled, especially in managing settler, convict, and Aboriginal populations. This literary historical project will analyse the production and circulation of colonial knowledge, by focusing on texts and print culture, and will map their influence on European thought and modern soc ....The Laboratory of Modernity: Knowledge Formation and the Australian Settler Colonies (1788-1900). AustLit - humanities research infrastructure development through knowledge-based dataset building, augmentation of key research elements and ICT developments. The AustLit development and augmentation program 2006-2008 will enable researchers to gain a greater understanding of the breadth and scope of Australia's conversation with the world through its literature by providing new datasets and enhanced access to the pre-eminent resource to our literary culture. AustLit aims to deliver authoritativ ....AustLit - humanities research infrastructure development through knowledge-based dataset building, augmentation of key research elements and ICT developments. The AustLit development and augmentation program 2006-2008 will enable researchers to gain a greater understanding of the breadth and scope of Australia's conversation with the world through its literature by providing new datasets and enhanced access to the pre-eminent resource to our literary culture. AustLit aims to deliver authoritative information and analysable data about all Australian writers and their writing and in 2006 will develop specialist datasets relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers; multicultural writers; and regional and colonial writing from Tasmania and Qld. The Australasian Legal History Library: Creating historical depth in legal data on AustLII, to improve all legal research. The Australasian Legal History Library, to be located for free access on AustLII, will provide comprehensive legislation and case law from all colonies (subsequently Australian States, Territories or New Zealand) up to 1950. Its citator will show how these historical materials are used in current legal decisions. It will be a revolution for legal history research.
