Commercially available CFD computer codes are currently widely used in many Australian industrial sectors. It is clearly recognised that the state-of-the-art models for dealing with complex bubbly flows with/without heat and mass transfer in these computer codes require further developments and improvements. This research project will address the prevalent deficiency in many of these computer codes. It is anticipated that through this major development of new models capable of predicting a wide range of industrial bubbly flow problems and implementation thereafter in these computer codes, industries will experience significant benefits especially reduce time and costs in their design and production.

    Summary
Development and implementation of efficient new models for electron correlation. The two new approaches will allow researchers in the chemical, pharmaceutical and materials sciences to predict the physical and chemical behaviour of moderately large molecular systems with an accuracy and efficiency that has not previously been possible. The software that will result will enable cost and time savings in the design of advanced materials in the medical and agricultural contexts.

A deep survey for compact structure in the nearby universe: key science for the upgraded Australian Long Baseline Array. This project uses advances in ICT to build a national and international network of facilities that includes existing telescopes primarily on the east coast of Australia, as well as planned facilities in Western Australia and New Zealand. One of these facilities, the New Technology Demonstrator, is a crucial part of Australia's roadmap to the Square Kilometre Array. The SKA-related science and technology demonstrations we will undertake as part of this project will contribute to Australia's bid to host this $US1b instrument. This project cements a significant Trans-Tasman collaboration and brings together researchers in astrophysics and ICT to give Australia a leading position in the field of eVLBI.

Snap, Crackle, Pop: Opening the Window on the Variable Radio Universe. Time variability is a frontier of discovery in astronomy. We will conduct a comprehensive set of surveys with new radio telescopes and instruments in order to build a full census of bursts, pulses, and flickers in the radio sky. Coupled with rapid follow up observations in the optical, X-ray and gamma-ray bands, these surveys will allow us to probe fundamental physics behind violent and unpredictable behaviour in the Universe. Our techniques, pipelines, and algorithms will serve as stepping stones for future experiments, and will also have wide applicability to searches for weak signals in noisy data in areas including physics, ecology, medical science, and economics.

In order to test fundamental quantum field theories, which underlie all physical phenomena from galaxy formation to the behaviour of biological system, it is necessary to be able to solve these theories in all regions of interest. In particular, solving theories in the nonperturbative regime has proven a difficult and challenging problem. The most successful theory that we have in physics is perturbative quantum electrodynamics, even though in the nonperturbative regime it is widely believed to be a trivial or pathological theory. We will build on exciting recent successes in this field and use advanced supercomputers to understand the detailed nonperturbative behaviour of quantum electrodynamics.
