In multicultural societies such as Australia, this is a pressing and significant question. To form and maintain a vibrant and prosperous community in the face of globalization, it is essential to understand the fundamental processes by which cultures are formed and transformed in everyday social activities. This project examines one such process, implicit cultural transmission, proposed to function in the nonconscious transmission of cultural information. Understanding the dynamics of this subtle, yet pervasive, mode of cultural influence is central to a full appreciation of how one's own culture and those of others' integrate and flourish.Read moreRead less
Behaviour of large networks of neurons in a functioning organ: a realistic computer-based model of the enteric nervous system. The organisation of the gut nervous system is well understood, but how nerve cells cooperate to control gut movements and secretions are matters of conjecture. The organisation of the gut nervous system is well understood, but how nerve cells cooperate to control gut movements and secretions are matters of conjecture. We will test these conjectures by simulating the behaviour of the gut nervous system using an anatomically and physiologically realistic computer model to predict the way the gut responds to specific stimuli and test these predictions using novel methods for recording gut movements and nervous activity. This will provide the first complete description of how a mammalian nervous system generates complex behaviours and will provide substantial pointers to how other nervous systems achieve similar tasks.Read moreRead less

Enhancing Intelligent Robot Navigation with the Evolution of a Robot-Friendly Language. Personal robots are set to become as popular as personal computers. The key ingredient that has been missing is intelligence - not the kind of intelligence that plays chess, but the kind that allows robots to understand the world in the way that we humans do. This project represents a major advance in that kind of intelligence, giving robots the ability to understand the world and the ability to communicate a ....Enhancing Intelligent Robot Navigation with the Evolution of a Robot-Friendly Language. Armed with this new technology, Australia will have a competitive edge in the new and fast growing personal robot industry.Read moreRead less
Robot Navigation From Nature: Simultaneous Localisation And Mapping Based On Hippocampal Models. This project will create a new method of robot control that allows a robot to learn a map of any area and then navigate using that map. The new method is based on ideas from recent models of rodent brains.
The resulting improvements in robot navigation offer immediate benefits to the emerging service robot industry. In addition, the act of reproducing a high-level brain function in a robot will inc ....Robot Navigation From Nature: Simultaneous Localisation And Mapping Based On Hippocampal Models. The new method is based on ideas from recent models of rodent brains.
The resulting improvements in robot navigation offer immediate benefits to the emerging service robot industry. In addition, the act of reproducing a high-level brain function in a robot will increase the understanding of memory and learning in mammals, including humans. Consequently, the outcomes of this research will benefit both robot designers and brain researchers.

The prediction of sleep/wake behaviour based on physiological and social factors. The prevalence of shiftwork has increased in Australia over the last few decades. Shiftworkers obtain less sleep, have greater difficulty maintaining good relationships, have poorer health, and are more likely to be injured at work than others. Using the largest dataset of its kind, we will substantially contribute to understanding the relationships between work hours, sleep, performance and safety. Using the largest dataset of its kind, we will substantially contribute to understanding the relationships between work hours, sleep, performance and safety. Ultimately, the project will answer a question critical to workplace safety - how much time off between shifts is needed to be alert and safe at work? The project will also produce tools to help industry design fatigue-friendly rosters, improving the safety, productivity and general well-being of shiftworkers in Australia and overseas.Read moreRead less

Moreover, language is the primary medium for the storage and dissemination of knowledge, a fact that has drawn many computer scientists to attempt to process, analyse and understand language. This network will bridge the many disciplines that are concerned with language, explore new ways in which computational models inform our understanding of human languages, and exploit new opportunities for applying theories of language in the development of human language technologies.Read moreRead less

This project develops a pidgin language for use in computer games and models the way human users exploit such languages. It has implications also for computer assisted collaborative work and other educational or entertainment interactive environments like computer games. By developing mini-languages for games environments we can dramatically simplify the speech recognition problem and make recognition robust across different speech cultures and backgrounds. We use protocol analysis and markup techniques for modelling dialogues between human player and reactive agents in computer games.Read moreRead less
