Australia is faced with the challenge of engendering trust in, and protecting, the information systems vital to the economic and social development of the nation. This initiative will produce a national direction for research, development and educational activities in information security with particular emphasis on the protection of the national interest. It will do so by bringing together for the first time, academic, government and business people from a vast array of backgrounds, and whose interests lie across a spectrum of commercial, legal, policy and research outcomes.Read moreRead less
Privacy Protection in Distributed Data Mining. Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has dramatically altered the world's social and economic landscape. 'From data to knowledge' is one of the priority challenges recognized by National ICT Australia. However, privacy concerns may prevent it from realization. This project aims to fulfil 'from data to knowledge' without breaching privacy of data from distributed resources held by different parties. The outcomes of this project will create ....Privacy Protection in Distributed Data Mining. The outcomes of this project will create new directions in the research of privacy-preserving distributed data mining and are applicable to Australian counter-terrorism and homeland defence in detecting bio-terrorism from privacy sensitive data.Read moreRead less

This project aims to fulfil 'from data to knowledge' without breaching privacy of user's queries to a data warehouse. The outcomes of this project will create new directions in the research of private data warehouse query, and are applicable to stock exchange data warehouses and pharmaceutical data warehouses, where the user is reluctant to reveal his query to the data warehouse operator.Read moreRead less
Identifying and Tracking Influential Events in Large Social Networks. This project aims to invent a novel model and techniques for identifying and tracking influential events in large and dynamic social networks in real time. The proposed model would take into account the structure and content of social networks, and the influence of events. This project aims to invent a novel model and techniques for identifying and tracking influential events in large and dynamic social networks in real time. The proposed model would take into account the structure and content of social networks, and the influence of events. The project also plans to develop efficient strategies for identifying and tracking events in large and dynamic social network environments based on the model, In particular, the project plans to investigate flexible social network query methods to make users’ event search easy. Finally the project plans to build an evaluation system to demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithms and effectiveness of the model.Read moreRead less
Efficient and effective algorithms for searching strings in secondary storage. Pattern searching is fundamental to a wide range of computing applications, including web search and bioinformatics. In this project we will develop compression algorithms and hybrid memory-disk search structures that allow fast pattern matching on sequences of textual and numeric data, including when approximate search is required.

Online services for collaborative communication and software distribution are commonplace today, but their use is hampered by data privacy breaches and intellectual property violations via software reverse engineering. Recent theoretical breakthroughs in cryptography promise to provide new powerful tools for solving these problems, but these tools are not yet suitable for practical use, due to their low efficiency and a lack of solid security foundations. This project aims to apply algebraic and probabilistic techniques to improve efficiency of existing tools, and the understanding of their security. Outcomes are expected to include new insights in cryptographic theory, and new practical tools for cyber security.Read moreRead less
