Areas in which Australia has a large stake, including the development of new drugs, disease research, and agricultural genetic engineering, stand to benefit considerably from these advances. This contribution by Australian researchers to a global problem will have a positive impact on our own health industry, and will provide the foundation for improvements in agriculture and financial services.

Improving provision of a document store as a service in a public cloud. This project aims to develop a model of document-oriented database correctness and performance that can be applied to cloud-hosted clusters. Many modern web applications rely on document-oriented databases hosted on clusters of virtualised servers from commercial cloud providers. Developers make difficult deployment decisions, such as how to combine data sharding and replication to meet service requirements without any guidance on the degree of precision. This research will allow developers and database administrators to predict how systems will behave in conditions difficult to simulate directly. Ultimately, this is expected to improve the quality and efficiency of services built using document databases.

The leak of sensitive data on cloud not only poses serious threats to both public and private organisations but also puts their employees and clients at risk, e.g., economic loss and social impact. The aim of this project is to develop a secure and efficient solution that can detect and prevent leak of data in real-time. Uniquely, the proposed research will develop novel techniques that can monitor data leak security incidents happening over time and captured by different sensors and identify correlations between historic security incidents and current data attacks. This project will significantly help to secure data on cloud for organisations in Australia and benefit fast-growing security sensitive data hosting and applications on cloud.

Developing an effective defence to cyber-reputation manipulation attacks. This project will develop new technologies for businesses to accurately identify fake internet reviews. Fake reviews, paid for and/or written with malicious intent, can cause irreparable damage to businesses resulting in revenue loss, consumer dissatisfaction or even closure of businesses. However they are difficult to identify, as they continuously evolve to avoid detection and the volume of Internet reviews makes analysis a monumental task. This project will provide advanced tools to detect fake website reviews and a cybersecurity system prototype ready to be used by industry, making Australia a leader in this field and resulting in a safer internet environment for all.

The Internet of Things (IoT) together with the rising popularity of smartphones opens a new world for many exciting opportunities. The overall goal of this project is to develop new algorithms and data analytical techniques in an IoT environment that can accurately monitor and analyse personalised daily activities on a continuous, real-time basis. The expected result of this project will support many critical applications such as better wellness tracking and lifestyle-related illness prevention, which will be particularly critical to Australia's aging population. This project will also serve as a vehicle to educate and train Australia’s young scholars and engineers.

Process communication, especially in web environments is characterized by complex interactions between heterogeneous and autonomous systems within the enterprise and often between trading partners. An overwhelming number of initiatives and proposals are underway to provide solutions for process specification and communication. However, the focus is often on defining APIs rather than the semantics of the underlying message exchange. We see a great potential in changing the current messaging infrastructure to suit its new role in facilitating complex, long running interactions for collaborative processes operating in a decentralized environment. This envisaged next generation of messaging technology will extend its ability to support dynamic business processes in a web-centric environment. Providing a level of harmonisation to multiple messages to form a single custom definable backbone of a newly formed message stream, creates a highly challenging new research direction. There is a strong potential that the project outcomes will present a new way of overcoming well understood difficulties in dealing with multiple communicating processes owned by different partners and executing on disparate systems.

Data Exchange and Service Integration with Applications in Health Information Systems. This project will research and develop an innovative new approach to facilitate real data exchange and service integration across different medical organisations. This approach will significantly improve the quality of health care by providing a solid foundation for integrated medical services, offering on demand and effective access to fragmentally stored patients medical information and minimise the number of data entry errors injected into the medical information systems. The novel integration model will also enable a new autonomous approach for demographic data collection which is essential for evidenced resource allocation, policy making and disease prevention.

Road crashes cost Australia $15 billion a year and 95% of these are attributed to drivers' errors. Risk assessment is at the core of the road crash problem. This innovative project develops a computational model that analyses situational driver behaviour and proposes real-time countermeasures to minimise fatalities/casualties. We develop and evaluate a novel Intelligent Transport System that assesses and acts upon drivers' risks. This multidisciplinary project integrates recent models of data mining, context-awareness computing, physiological metrics, ubiquitous computing, driver distraction models, risk perception and road safety. This project yields a new understanding of driver behaviour and countermeasures in risk situations.
