FOOD AND RISK: RESEARCHING LAY PERCEPTIONS AND MEDIA REPRESENTATIONS. The project will document and analyse issues concerning the risks associated with food in selected print news media and investigate lay people's notions of risk associated with the consumption of food. It will focus in particular on food poisoning and contamination, genetically-modified food and BSE and vCJD (`mad cow') issues, all of which have attracted a great deal of public attention and media coverage. A society divided: a multilevel approach for understanding socio-economic opportunity and vulnerability. Despite a strong economy since the early 1990s uneven socioeconomic outcomes remain characteristic of Australian society. The costs to individuals, communities and society itself of these uneven outcomes are significant. Crucially policy needs understand the multi-dimensional nature of the drivers of these uneven outcomes so as to ameliorate the negative cost. The project uses participant observation of the Internet mailing list Cybermind, to explore the dynamics and effects of gender online. Users of the list will be followed through their everyday interactions, and through their experience of other online forums, to see how these effects vary.

This project uses social science research methods to examine perceptions of the roles and authority of the police among ethnic groups in Australia. Outcomes will have implications for police community cooperation and cooperation with social institutions more generally (e.g. government authorities). Globalisation and the global income distribution in times of stability and in times of crisis. Australia is one of the countries most affected by globalisation and the rise of Asia. Moreover, the large income disparities between Australia and its neighbours put many burdens on Australia to manage immigration, accommodate refugees, and provide support to regional governments. This study uses data from around the world to model how global and regional economic integration is changing over time.
