Summary
Bioethics has not delivered the local ethical resources needed for public health research in community settings. This program will develop and test a new framework and practical tools for research governance and responses to ethical challenges in community-based public health research. It will deliver a new public health ethics system, policy and practice resources to suit the multi-disciplinarity of the modern public health research field.
Two new strategies that use anti-HIV drugs for prevention have been proven effective in recent trials. This increases prevention options but may pose challenges to ‘safe sex culture’. This fellowship will analyse ethical aspects of new HIV prevention strategies by exploring how Australians with or at high risk of HIV understand and incorporate new forms of HIV prevention into sexual negotiation. It will also examine how new prevention strategies affect laws that criminalise HIV transmission.

New psychoactive drugs that mimic the effects of prohibited drugs are increasingly available in Australia, and there is mounting evidence of their harmful health effects. This research examines the challenges and opportunities of internet technologies for understanding trends in new and emerging drug use and harms. Findings will inform the development of more effective public health responses to reduce morbidity and mortality from new psychoactive drugs and other illicit drug use.
Adolescent Brain Development And Social Cognitive Deficits In Early Psychosis: Can Intervention Improve Outcome?

Summary
This project aims to investigate the origin of impairments in social thinking of young people with first episode psychosis (FEP), and whether social cognitive training can reverse these problems and improve social functioning. We think that slower maturation of particular brain regions during adolescence may be related to these social cognitive deficits. We will also explore whether providing training in these skills can influence the development of these key brain structures.
