The Federal Government's Family Law Pathways Advisory Group recommended that a national research agenda be developed for family law and social policy that focuses on the separation and divorce transition. For many families Commonwealth private family law and the public law of child protection and domestic violence, provides the setting in which this transition takes place. Food security is a problem in many Asian Pacific countries, and in Australia there is an urgent need to improve agricultural yields, increase sustainability, enhance the breeding of new plant varieties, and to adapt to climatic and environmental changes. In addition, an unmet demand for food in the region provides an important opportunity for Australian agriculture. If a food-secure future for Australia and the Asia Pacific is to be achieved, higher agricultural yields must be produced from increasingly limited or degraded inputs. Mitigating tax barriers to trade and investment relations between Australia and the People’s Republic of China. China and Australia's conflicting tax rules and attitudes towards tax administration affect the level of trade, investment and labour mobility between the two countries. This project will explore and propose methods of reform for both the Chinese and Australian tax systems to strengthen our economic relationship.
Small mercies, big futures: enhancing law, policy and practice in the selection, protection and settlement of refugee children and youth. This project will assist refugee youth and children who ultimately become Australian citizens or permanent residents. In so doing, it will help to maximise the social benefits that flow from immigration. The project will also help to reduce the risk of social dysfunction that flows from damage sustained in childhood. Did Australian courts develop an Australian law of tort between federation and the Second World War despite the confines of being bound formally or informally by English precedent? Australian courts may have been more creative and independent and less subservient to England than previously thought.
Between social enterprise and social movement: responses to environmental change at the intersection of rights and regulation. This socio-legal project will illuminate the diverse ways in which formal law blocks or encourages the efforts of ordinary citizens to respond to the challenges of reducing our carbon footprint. It will significantly develop the foundations for designing effective governance structures to support ethically-motivated citizen initiatives.
Measuring and evaluating performance in securities market regulation. The global financial crisis continues to generate ‘wicked’ problems of acute social and legal complexity. These have profound implications for the theory and practice of corporate governance and financial regulation. This project will map and evaluate the interaction of rules, principles and social norms to create accountable governance mechanisms.

Civil society is increasingly seeking to participate directly in proceedings before international criminal tribunals, including as an amicus curiae or friend of the court. This project provides the first comprehensive assessment of: the methods by which civil society actors seek to intervene in international criminal tribunals and the influence of such interventions on ....Evaluating civil society participation before international criminal tribunals: the amicus curiae and the rights of the defence. Civil society is increasingly seeking to participate directly in proceedings before international criminal tribunals, including as an amicus curiae or friend of the court. This project provides the first comprehensive assessment of: the methods by which civil society actors seek to intervene in international criminal tribunals and the influence of such interventions on legal outcomes; the extent to which such interventions are consistent with the right of the defence to a fair trial; the growing reliance of courts on the amicus brief, and its implications for the defence; and, whether such interventions reflect the range of civil society interests in international criminal justice, or are limited to 'Western' perspectives.Read moreRead less
