The topic of this fellowship is dynamical simulations of star clusters using high-end graphics cards originally developed for the computer gaming industry. The proposed fellowship will thereby enhance Australia's capacity in the exploitation of high-performance computing and will give it a strong position in the new field of graphics card based simulations. The computer cluster built during the fellowship will also be an outstanding environment for the training of students. In addition, while Australia has a strong tradition in star cluster astronomy, it has so far not captured a leadership role in the theoretical analysis. The four years of this fellowship will allow it to establish a world-leading position in star cluster simulations.Read moreRead less
Advanced materials for space propulsion: satellites and cubesats. Poorly controlled interactions between plasmas and surfaces often mean loss of process efficiency and surface degradation over time. Poorly controlled interactions between plasmas and surfaces often mean loss of process efficiency and surface degradation over time. For Hall thrusters, a type of engine used to move satellites in space, this means increased fuel consumption and shorter useful life. Through modelling and experiment, this project will show how intelligent selection of advanced materials and plasma parameters can minimise surface wear, enable in situ material repair to extend device lifetime, and modulate plasma properties to increase thruster efficiency for a given task. These benefits enable reliable propulsion platforms for massive communication and observation satellite networks and deep space exploration.Read moreRead less
Bioactive Peptides as Pharmacological Tools and Novel Drug Leads. Bioactive peptides are produced by all organisms and play numerous critical physiological roles, including in cellular communication, host defence and capture of prey. Bioactive peptides are produced by all organisms and play numerous critical physiological roles, including in cellular communication, host defence and capture of prey. Peptides have huge potential as tools for studying roles of signalling pathways and as novel drugs due to their high affinity and selectivity for various therapeutically relevant targets. However their use has been limited by poor in vivo stability. This project is focused on studying structural features of a range of peptides and their contributions to both activity and to resistance against degradation, with the aim to develop stabilised bioactive peptide sequences for in vivo applications, allowing the full potential of peptides as drugs to be realised.Read moreRead less
Theoretical modelling and design of safe covalent anti-cancer drugs. Covalent drugs are a new class of drugs with outstanding potential in cancer therapy. Detailed computer modelling studies will be performed to determine how these drugs interact with an important target in cancer therapy, the epithelial growth factor receptor, and thereby aid the development of new cancer treatments.
Innovative multiscale modelling to explore mechanical properties of single living cells. This project will develop a new modelling platform to explore the relationship between living cell mechanical properties, their response to mechanical loads and their biological functions. Providing knowledge beyond current experimental measurements, this model will support studies into new treatments and preventions for diseases.
Development of population-level algorithms for modelling genomic variation and its impact on cellular function in animals and plants. The purpose of this project is to develop mathematical and computational tools which will enable researchers to model high-throughput biological data at the population level. These models will be used to uncover the effect that genetic variation has on the physiology of the cell and the organism.

This project aims to combine computational modelling, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), mechanical measurement and pathological analysis to investigate carotid plaque progression, and quantify the critical blood flow and plaque stress/strain conditions under which plaque rupture is likely to occur. MRI-based 3D computational models with multi-component plaque structures and their interaction with blood flow will be developed and solved numerically to identify suitable plaque rupture risk indicators. Mechanical properties of plaque components will be measured ex-vivo and fibre orientation-based constitutive rules will be developed. This project aims to lead to quantitative understandings of plaque progression and rupture.Read moreRead less

Structural insights of virus-glycan interactions. Influenza virus, rotavirus and Dengue virus infect the body by adhering to certain types of sugars on the human cell surface. This project will develop a detailed structural understanding of how viruses interact with those sugar molecules for the development of novel drugs and vaccines to combat influenza and rotaviral infections.
