From prehistory to history: landscape and cultural change on the South Alligator River, Kakadu National Park. This project explores the archaeology, history and palaeoecology of the Kakadu floodplains to better understand social and environmental changes that have taken place in this landscape from the mid-Holocene to historical times. The outcome will be a contextualised understanding of potential climate change impacts against a history of past change.

The aim of this project is to understand how past people in the riverine landscapes of the Murray-Darling Basin (MDB) were influenced by and adapted to environmental change. This will be achieved using a novel cross-disciplinary approach combining state-of-the-art palaeoenvironmental and archaeological methods. A new chronological framework to access regional variability in mid-Pleistocene archaeological, palaeoecological and palaeoclimatic data from Africa. This project will enable us to understand, for the first time, the contribution of South Africa to human origins between 1.8 and 0.6 million years ago. It will help us understand how major changes in climate have influenced our evolutionary history, the animals around us and how our behaviour and tools have changed to adapt to such changes.

The human journey across the globe is one of our greatest achievements, yet the archaeological evidence for the earliest migrations is poorly dated, plagued by uncertainty and often overlooked. This project aims to characterise the nature of early human dispersals across Asia en route to Australasia by going beyond the timing and identification of human evidence to explore their behaviour, health and adaptability. Wadi Rayyan and Olive Production in the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Ages (4500-3000 BCE). This project seeks funds to excavate two sites in the Wadi Rayyan in the highlands of Jordan. This previously unexplored area of Jordan is at high altitude and an excellent region for olive growing. Both sites show evidence of agricultural processing (features cut into the bedrock) and both show evidence of Chalcolithic/EBA occupation (4500-3000 BCE).
