Family-run farms are an integral part of rural Australia. Given the evolving global financial crisis and the expanding complexity of managing a family farm in Australia due to increasing competition from large incorporated holdings and overseas producers, a persisting drought, rising climate variability, and constraining carbon markets, one critical issue for the sustainability of family farms is their ability to access and manage successfully competitive sources of credit. This study examines the extent to which family farms are currently at a disadvantage, and what policies could be implemented to ensure their sustainability into the future via access to competitive lines of credit and appropriate financial management practices.Read moreRead less

The community will benefit from the project by reduced air pollution and improved health and safety. Soot is a major air pollutant, adversely effecting public health, while also contributing directly to global warming. It also dominates heat transfer and influences the emissions of NOx and CO2. The project will significantly advance detailed understanding and modelling capability of flames containing soot. Hence it will provide significantly improved capability to optimise these flames in applications spanning gas turbines, power generation, minerals processing and fires.Read moreRead less
Detailed understanding of the behaviour of soot in, and emission from, turbulent flames and fires. While combustion processes involving soot have been widely employed for many years, their great complexity puts them beyond present capacity to understand or model reliably. Within a flame, soot plays an important role in radiant heat transfer, and hence in energy efficiency. Beyond a flame, soot can either be emitted as an unwanted air pollutant or as a desirable source of nano-particles, dependin ....Detailed understanding of the behaviour of soot in, and emission from, turbulent flames and fires. While combustion processes involving soot have been widely employed for many years, their great complexity puts them beyond present capacity to understand or model reliably. Within a flame, soot plays an important role in radiant heat transfer, and hence in energy efficiency. Beyond a flame, soot can either be emitted as an unwanted air pollutant or as a desirable source of nano-particles, depending on the application. The benefits to society from improved understanding and predictive capability include reduced air pollution, improved health and safety, increased efficiency in the utilisation of both fossil and alternative fuels, the support of the rapidly growing sector employing carbon nano-particles and increased fire safety. This project aims to examine economic restructuring processes focusing on the parts of regional Australia that are being left behind by globalisation. The project will examine patterns of firm entry and exit in disadvantaged local economies following major plant closures and identify the causal pathways associated with sustainable employment and industry growth. The project will deploy the innovative methodology of Qualitative Comparative Analysis and utilise recently developed datasets with a view to isolating causal relationships. By generating new knowledge about how space, positioning, and state interventions temper the nature and form of business births and deaths, the project will generate new regional policy insights and approaches.Read moreRead less

This project applies to the National Research Priority of an environmentally sustainable Australia. A critical challenge for the development of power systems will be to transform them from their current dependence on conventional centralised generation to a situation where more diversified, more volatile and less controllable generation sources contribute a significant percentage of the energy. Coupled with this is a change in demand patterns due to both demographic and socio-economic variables as well as climate change. Careful analysis is required in the design of the future grid architecture to ensure the security of supply.Read moreRead less

The project will consider aquaculture in relation to social, natural and economic systems, extending the Capitals Framework of assessing rural sustainability developed by the Association of Social Science in Australia. The study combines quantitative and qualitative data in order to assess changes in the stocks of community capital as oyster aquaculture develops. A key aim of the research is to inform the development of policies and governance structures in Australian aquaculture management.Read moreRead less

This proposal seeks to establish a state-of-the-art laser diagnostics facility with unique capabilities for non-intrusive measurements in dilute multi-phase flows. Such heterogeneous flows which involve stationary surfaces, disperse suspended droplets or suspended particles are found in many applications including engines, furnaces, industrial and chemical processing and micro-combustion devices. This facility will give Australian researchers the unprecedented opportunity to perform measurements of flow, mixing, temperature and composition fields in the gas and liquid or solid phases simultaneously. The resulting data will advance current knowledge in these complex flows and lead to new and improved reactor designs.

A low pressure-drop oscillating jet nozzle, developed recently by the investigators, will be applied to pulverised fuel combustion to provide an advanced, low emission burner for the cement industry. This design is expected to overcome the high pressure drop of the present design which limits its range of application. The program will apply advanced measurement techniques to study the aerodynamic behaviour of particles, which control many aspects of the combustion. These will be used to advance understanding and for the development and validation of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. A preferred design will be assessed in FCT's model lab and then in full-scale trials.Read moreRead less
