Summary
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as chlamydia are increasing. Without effective vaccines, STIs can only be controlled by behavioral or screening interventions. This program of research will help us understand how STIs such as chlamydia, Mycoplasma genitalium, HPV and bacterial vaginosis spread among Australians and will help us to determine how best to control them.

Summary
Rates of gonorrhoea are extremely high in Indigenous populations of Australia, and the gonorrhoea bug has now developed resistance to almost all antibiotics that have been used to treat it. In this study, we will investigate a new means of diagnosing the infection, as well as better ways to detect gonorrhoea drug resistance. By doing so, we will ensure that gonorrhoea infections are better managed, particularly in our Indigenous populations.

Australians experience a substantial burden of health and social consequences related to sexually transmissible infections (STIs). The Career Development Fellowship will enable me to conduct research to improve sexual health of people at risk of STIs, through evaluating new strategies that increase the accessibility of STI testing; information technology to improve the efficiency of health services; and a better understanding of the impact of social media on young people’s sexual health.

Summary
There are currently large gaps in the evidence base for management of common severe bacterial infections. My research plan focuses on the most common of these: Staphylococcus aureus infections, bone and joint infections, skin infections, and severe sepsis. In order to both generate important evidence to inform practice, as well as to develop my own skills and experience as an expert in clinical trials, I have initiated randomised controlled trials in each of these areas.

Summary
Staphylococcal and streptococcal infections are major causes of illness and death, particularly in Indigenous Australians. These include invasive bloodstream infections and skin infections that lead to chronic kidney and heart disease. I will conduct clinical trials to optimise the management of staphylococcal bloodstream infections using novel trial methods, and use genomics and mathematical modelling to understand and reduce the burden of skin infections in Indigenous communities.

This project will focus on two important bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus (Golden Staph), and Enterococcus faecium, both causes of serious infections in hospital and community patients in Australia. Using new technologies, including whole genome sequencing, this project will lead to significant advances in understanding how these bacteria evolve, spread and cause disease. This will lead to new strategies for prevention and management of infections caused by these important bacteria.
