Tropical sand beach ridges - a new approach to palaeotempestology. Investigations of sand beach ridges in northern Australia will considerably reduce the impact of future tropical cyclones on communities. These ridges record a detailed history of cyclones over the past 5,000 years. Due to the great length of record we will now be able to identify cycles of cyclone activity, which will allow us to better predict the consequences of these hazards under an enhanced greenhouse climate and reduce the ....Tropical sand beach ridges - a new approach to palaeotempestology. The aim of this proposal is to establish a state-of-the-art research facility as part of a comprehensive material characterisation infrastructure required to support JCU's expanding activities in geology, oceanography, sustainable water research and nanotechnology. New instruments to measure attractive forces between particles, material density, porosity, surface area, and carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur content in conjunction with replacing an old grain size analyser will provide advanced instrumentation for research across several Schools with a diversity of research priorities. The proposed facility will create new opportunities for collaborative programs with national and international researchers as well as foster industry partnership.Read moreRead less

This facility will enable researchers to obtain high-resolution geochemical profiles in the study of environmental change and climate variability. It will provide archive data on the variation of density and chemical element composition along sediment and soil cores, rock cores, wood samples, speleothems and corals. These archives contain important information such as human activity, climate variability, water quality changes, pollution histories, recent geomorphological change, land-use change, introduction of invasive species and the occurrence of bushfires. A better understanding of the occurrence and timing of these major environmental issues is of national and regional importance.Read moreRead less
