The Australian economy is gradually expanding its manufacturing base through the development of the nanotechnology and biotechnology sectors. This will lead to production of a more diverse range of elaborately transformed goods. A key contributor to these export opportunities will be the nanotechnology sector since at the present time no country has a real nanotechnology based economy and there are many niche markets available for smaller countries such as Australia. This proposal helps to build quality control and characterisation infrastructure that will facilitate prototyping and design of nanoscale devices and sensors for next generation manufacturing.Read moreRead less

Infrared sensors and systems are finding increasing use in Australia's core industries: particularly defence, mineral exploration, environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, homeland security, and medical diagnostics. Due to the reduced cooling requirements, the Infrared detector structures to be investigated in this project have the potential to deliver high performance infrared technology at a significantly lower cost and, hence, widening its applications. The new science proposed in this project, and new technological knowledge expected from its application, will allow Australian researchers to participate and significantly contribute to the international effort in this field and to exploit any developed intellectual property. The proposed research will increase understanding of the strategies diatoms use to sort particles. Our hypothesis is that in the process of understanding how these diatom surfaces control particles, blueprints for microfluidic devices will be identified. The appeal of diatoms goes beyond consideration of the geometrical patterning on their surfaces, because their frustules (the diatomic shells) are made primarily out of silica, a material also used in nanofabrication. We expect that some of the strategies and patterns used by cells will be able to be directly transferred to microfluidics, and bypass years of empirical development in nanofabrication and lab-on-a-chip devices.Read moreRead less
