The project seeks to establish equipment to enable the investigation of high-speed energetic processes. Such processes, where large amounts of energy are released over a short time frame, occur in nature and almost every field of science and engineering, and their investigation is a formidable challenge. This challenge is designed to be met through the combined use of state-of-the-art flow visualisation, thermography and spectrometry equipment. These diagnostics would open avenues into so far impossible or difficult to conduct research on highly transient phenomena in various research fields, which include various aspects of fluid mechanics, combustion, and fracture mechanics. The equipment would be instrumental in the design of better and innovative machines, materials, instruments and processes.Read moreRead less

Using the toolbox of quantum information and quantum optics, the project expects to generate novel methods for 2D and 3D imaging, and precision measurements that can reach fundamental limits. Imaging is critical in much of today's research. The unparalleled resolution can benefit a broad range of scientific fields, the medical and the defence sector by resolving objects otherwise impossible. This project will strengthen Australia’s position as a world leader in quantum technologies by presenting solutions to overcome critical bottlenecks in imaging methods in the optical domain.Read moreRead less

These diamonds must be doped with both an electron donors and active 'quantum-defects' to operate. Within existing devices, the electronic donors also create parasitic magnetic noise, due to their magnetic-spin properties. In this project we aim to investigate the growth of diamond with new electronic donors, aiming for spin-free and thus noise-free dopant properties. This should provide significant benefits to defence capability, through enhanced magnetic anomaly detection in naval environments, and health outcomes, through neural sensing of brain signals at room temperature.Read moreRead less

Increased sensitivity-speed products will improve thermal imager effectiveness in motion capture and high resolution remote sensing applications. To develop these porous materials, this project will study the interdependence of optical, mechanical, thermal and electrical properties at the micro- and nano-scale. It will create a narrowband resonant cavity detector which increases sensitivity and provides spectral filtering for remote sensing and gas detection. This technology is built on a low-cost scalable all-silicon platform. Ultra-fast serialised all optical image processing: addressing the electronic bottleneck in the world's fastest camera. Serial time encoded amplified microscopy can capture over a million frames per second. At this rate, a megapixel image would fill a terabyte hard disk in a second. We will use photonics to condense and manipulated the video stream so that only the important features are 'seen', making it practical to process and store on a computer.
