Opportunity spaces - community engagement in the planning, use and governance of shared school facilities. This project will capitalise on investment across Australia in renewing schools and building community education precincts. The work will illuminate the role played by civic infrastructure in community building, the benefits of coordinating social and educational services, and the potential of schools as learning resources for the whole community.
Exploiting Geometries of Learning for Fast, Adaptive and Robust AI. This project aims to uniquely exploit geometric manifolds in deep learning to advance the frontier of Artificial Intelligence (AI) research and applications in cybersecurity and general cognitive tasks. It expects to develop new theories, algorithms, tools, and technologies for machine learning systems that are fast, adaptive, lifelong and robust, even with limited supervision. Expected outcomes will enhance Australia's capabili ....Exploiting Geometries of Learning for Fast, Adaptive and Robust AI. Expected outcomes will enhance Australia's capability and competitiveness in AI, and deliver robust and trustworthy learning technology. The project should provide significant benefits not only in advancing scientific and translational knowledge but also in accelerating AI innovations, safeguarding cyberspace, and reducing the burden on defence expenses in Australia.Read moreRead less
School principals’ diminishing wellbeing. School principals’ diminishing wellbeing. This project aims to investigate the effect of State Education Departments’ policy interventions designed to improve school principals’ flagging wellbeing. This project aims to investigate the effect of State Education Departments’ policy interventions designed to improve school principals’ flagging wellbeing. Increasing competition, accountability and public scrutiny make principals stressed; since their influence on students is second only to teachers’, this threatens Australia’s socioeconomic outcomes. The project will map policy interventions to changes in principals’ motivation and wellbeing, and share information about the most productive and cost effective interventions with key stakeholders across Australia. This research could reverse the declining wellbeing of Australia’s school leaders.Read moreRead less
Observed streamflow generation changes: better understanding and modelling. This Project aims to investigate drivers and triggers of variable streamflow response during and after drought and develop modelling strategies and model structures more robust to changing streamflow response. In many catchments during the Millennium Drought, streamflow generation was less than expected and hydrologic models performed poorly. After the drought, streamflow generation is yet to recover in some catchments. ....Observed streamflow generation changes: better understanding and modelling. This Project expects to generate new knowledge about variable streamflow response to drought and develop strategies and models to robustly simulate runoff during and after changed conditions, which should provide significant benefit via better understanding and modelling of streamflow response under changing conditions.Read moreRead less

Unmanned aerial vehicle sensing and data discovery for a changing planet. This project aims to establish an earth systems monitoring facility, using unmanned aerial vehicles and world-leading sensor technology. It will have the capability to measure the natural and built environment at millimetre to centimetre scales and to monitor rapid changes. The ensuing data and interpretations will be useful for decision-making and policy development amongst government agencies and the agricultural, enviro ....Unmanned aerial vehicle sensing and data discovery for a changing planet. David and Goliath - what planets can do to the stars that created them. We used to think that when stars expand during their old age, they would destroy all their close-by planets. Today we know that if a star swallows a Jupiter-like planet it can suffer indigestion. The project will study how star-planet interactions takes place, determine their impact on the lives of stars and glimpse at the future of our own solar system.
Movement ecology of flying-foxes. This project aims to understand flying-fox movement ecology from individual navigation through to population redistribution. This project aims to understand flying-fox movement ecology from individual navigation through to population redistribution. Understanding movement across spatiotemporal scales is a goal of movement research. Grey-headed flying-foxes are mobile, and advances in tracking technology make them ideal for studying movement across scales. This project will determine how flying foxes navigate, and integrate this with drivers of their movement to understand their movement ecology by using methods that integrate experimental manipulation with telemetry, Doppler radar and analytical techniques. This is expected to develop much-needed management strategies that incorporate an understanding of movement.Read moreRead less

Making these systems more intelligent has thus become a priority research issue. Agents systems, with their emphasis on autonomy, proactiveness, reactivity, and sociability, are widely regarded as a crucial technology for realising the capabilities that computer systems will need over the next few decades. The proposed research aims to make some fundamental contributions to agent systems that will be used to build future computer systems that will have an even more profound positive impact on everyday life, commerce and industry than existing systems.Read moreRead less
Systematic planning beyond conservation: a multi-objective, multi action framework for sustainable biodiversity. When planning for conservation in rivers, protecting plants and animals can not simply be achieved by protecting parts of a river. This project will develop a strategy to sustain freshwater biodiversity that will optimally allocate conservation and restoration resources and minimises negative socioeconomic impacts on stakeholders.
Manipulative mothers and family feuds: evolution of maternal effects under mother-offspring conflict. Can mothers shape the lives of their offspring and their grand-offspring? Can siblings shape the lives of their brothers and sisters? This project will address how mother and offspring strategies affect current and future generations. This is crucial for understanding how mothers will direct and accelerate evolutionary change in our changing world.
