Increasing School Connectedness: Boosting The Effects Of A Curriculum-based Injury Prevention Program For Adolescents

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $116,198.00
    Summary
Adolescent injury is a significant problem that requires comprehensive and multi-level prevention approaches. Research has shown that a lack of adolescent connection in the school context is associated with injury-risk behaviour and adverse health outcomes. This study involves the development of a school connectedness intervention to increase the effectiveness of the individually-oriented Skills for Preventing Injury in Youth (SPIY) program in reducing adolescent risk behaviour and injury.

Development Of An Evidence-based Framework To Guide Intervention Development For Off-road Motorcyclists.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $72,974.00
    Summary
Off-road motorcycle and ATV riding are popular recreations in Australia, particularly in rural areas. Approximately half of all motorcycle hospital admissions occur off public roads. Unlike on-road riders, little targeted research has been undertaken. The current project aims to profile the characteristics of off-road riders and their crashes, review related strategies to reduce injury, and develop a specific intervention framework.

Understanding Parent Behaviours That Promote Language In Slow-to-talk Toddlers

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $95,144.00
    Summary
Research suggests that parent-child interactions can have a positive effect on the language development of preschool age children. This community-based study aims to identify which specific parent behaviours promote language in a group of 200 slow-to-talk toddlers. If specific parent behaviours are found to result in better language outcomes in slow-to-talk toddlers, the results will have the potential to promote far more pro-active management of early language delay.

Sociocultural Determinants Of Childrens Oral Health From Refugee And Migrant Communities

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $57,342.00
    Summary
Refugee and migrant children experience significantly poorer oral health than the non-migrant population. Factors that impact on poor oral health include perceptions of tap water safety, dietary changes, access to prevention and treatment health services, and language barriers. This study will explore reasons for these factors and potential solutions. Communities involved are those which have arrived the most recently and those with large numbers of young children.
