Novel Strategies For Improving Syphilis Testing And Control

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,256,041.00
    Summary
Syphilis has been resurgent in many countries including Australia. Our research will evaluate novel strategies to improve syphilis testing, surveillance, and control and ensure these new strategies are effective at targeting affected groups attending health services. The research findings will help guide better syphilis testing and control by health care providers, pathology services and health policy makers.

My Post Doctoral studies will assess the natural history of human papillomavirus (HPV) in men who have sex with men (MSM) and novel strategies aimed at increasing testing and early detection of HIV and other sexually transmitted infection (STIs). These studies will be conducted at the Kirby Institute (KI), the Chinese National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention, Beijing (NCAIDS) and the Wuxi Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Wuxi, China, and potentially other institutions.

    Summary
The primary aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between early and regular testing of STIs and BBVs and transmission outcomes to inform effective strategies to prevent ongoing transmission of STIs and BBVs in at-risk populations. Specifically it will examine HIV, chlamydia, syphilis and gonorrhoea in men who have sex with men (MSM) in Victoria. A Randomised Trial Of Allowing Men Who Have Sex With Men To Have HIV And Syphilis Tests Between Clinic Consultations.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $381,414.00
    Summary
Rates of HIV and syphilis are rising in gay men in Australia. If these men have HIV and syphilis blood tests more frequently this is likely to reduce the spread of these infections. This trial tests the hypothesis that increased access to testing will increase the rate of testing. We are comparing the rate of testing in 420 gay men, half of whom are allowed to test whenever they choose, without having another clinical consultation.
