Forging A New Understanding Of Iron In Neurodegenerative Disease.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $598,573.00
    Summary
Using the versatile model system, C. elegans, this proposal will define how normal functions of the brain become corrupted with age and hijacked by neurodegenerative diseases to cause dementia. Coupling specialised X-ray imaging only available at the Australian Synchrotron with the research excellence of the University of Melbourne, this Fellowship will provide a better understanding of normal ageing and how this relates to the development and progression of neurodegenerative diseases.

Fostering Responsive Mental Health Systems In The Syrian Refugee Crisis

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $499,989.00
    Summary
The current refugee crisis across Europe and the Middle East effects both individual refugees’ psychological well-being, as they face extreme stressors in their flight from their home country. In response to this crisis, this project aims to provide a framework for scaling-up the delivery and uptake of effective community-based mental health strategies to address the specific needs of refugees with mental health problems in ways that are affordable and can be delivered to millions of refugees.

Dementia Associated To Diabetes: Prevention Through The Modulation Of Cerebrovascular Integrity

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $719,770.00
    Summary
Diabetic insulin resistance is reported to induce cognitive decline and dementia. An accumulating body of evidence suggest that compromised integrity of neurovascular unit and following changes in cerebral lipid homeostasis may be centrally involved in the neurodegeneration and cognitive deficits. Therefore, the project aims to prevent the insulin resistance-associated cognitive impairment by modulating the integrity of cerebrovasculature and lipid homeostasis.

Indigenous Mental Health Model Of Care: RCT Based On A Trans-diagnostic CBT Program Co-designed With Community

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $996,217.00
    Summary
We propose to develop an Indigenous Model of Mental Health Care (IMMHC) that encompasses psychological therapy and cultural healing practices developed in consultation with local, participating Indigenous communities, that will for the first time treat highly prevalent mood and anxiety disorders in Indigenous Australians.

PREVention Of Diabetes Through Lifestyle Intervention And Population Studies In Europe And Around The World

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $345,281.00
    Summary
The PREVIEW Study will identify the most efficient lifestyle pattern for the prevention of type-2 diabetes in a population of pre-diabetic overweight or obese individuals. The project comprises two distinct lines of evidence, an intervention study and population studies. The focus will be on diet (specifically protein and glycemic index) and intensity of physical activity, as well as their interaction with the lifestyle factors, habitual stress, sleeping pattern, behavioural, environmental, cult .... Neuroimaging Insights Into Sleep-wake Dysfunction In Older Adults 'at Risk' Of Developing Dementia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $548,235.00
    Summary
This program of research aims to investigate the biological mechanisms underlying the relationship between sleep dysfunction and dementia. I aim to apply my magnetic resonance imaging expertise and experience working with individuals ‘at risk’ of dementia and further develop my emerging skills in sleep research, to improve our understanding of this fundamental relationship and investigate the effect of targeted interventions and longitudinal clinical outcomes in ‘at risk’ older adults.

Treating Mental Health In Aboriginal Adolescents

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $1,549,875.00
    Summary
Adolescent indigenous Australians suffer much higher rates of psychological disorder than other Australians. At present we have no evidence for any programs that reduce the risk of suicide, depression, or posttraumatic stress disorder in this population. This project will provide the first evidence of the efficacy of a indigenously-adapted form of cognitive behaviour therapy aimed to treat anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and hopelessness in Australian Aborigines.

NOX Enzymes As Mediators Of Inflammation-triggered Neurodegeneration: Modulating NOX Enzymes As Novel Therapies

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $994,846.00
    Summary
The NEURINOX project aims at identifying novel therapeutic targets for neurodegenerative diseases; an increasing health issue for the ageing Australian population. NADPH oxidases (NOX) enzymes, generate reactive oxygen species, and are key regulators of neuroinflammation. Inflammatory dysregulation is characterized by a change in NOX activity. NEURINOX will expound the links between neuroinflammation, NOX enzyme activity & neurodegenerative diseases to identify novel therapeutic targets to treat .... SOLUTIONS For Present And Future Emerging Pollutants In Land And Water Resources Management

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $259,784.00
    Summary
The European Union project SOLUTIONS will develop a novel conceptual framework to prioritise chemical contaminants for ecological and human health risk assessment of water resources and fish for human consumption. The Australian partner will implement health-relevant bioanalytical endpoints to inform cumulative risk assessment. The developed concepts and tools will be validated using European river case studies, with the knowledge generated to be transferred to the Australian context.
