An knowledge-based approach to multi-document text summarisation for automated meta-analysis of the scientific literature. The biomedical sciences produce literature at an exponential rate, and the size of this knowledge base far exceeds the capacity of humans to keep up with the growth in new knowledge. This project will develop computational text summarisation methods to abstract the content of scientific journal articles reporting clinical trials, and develop multi-document summarisation methods to synthesise these abstracts using automated statistical meta-analysis methods. These methods have broad potential to improve text-summarisation technologies in general, to profoundly enhance our ability to integrate published knowledge, and to make a highly significant and specific contribution to improving the quality of evidence used in health decision-making.

Engineering safe decision support systems for healthcare. System safety is critical to the success of large-scale computerisation being undertaken to improve the quality of health services delivery worldwide. The research program will develop innovative tools and methods to improve the safety of clinical information systems. The focus on electronic prescribing systems will ensure that the outcomes of this research will have immediate impact on reducing medication errors which are a significant public health issue both nationally and internationally.

Many professional groups have large unmet information needs, with significant consequences for the public. We will take a novel strategy-based approach to the design of agents that assist humans in information search tasks, which represents a significant departure from the dominant paradigm of content-based retrieval. Our goal is to develop automated methods to learn task specific search strategies, embed them in agents, and use them to guide human-agent interactions and search behaviours. To discover the effectiveness of our approach we will evaluate our methods with health care professionals.

Continuous process improvement through workstation feedback for General Practice medicine using experts-in-the-loop data mining. This project investigates the iterative use of data mining results to allow experts to construct feedback to influence subsequent production work. We explore the problem in the context of General Practice medicine by having General Practitioners (GPs) review emerging patterns from their own practice's electronic medical records and author feedback to discourage undesirable patterns. The work will have immediate applicability to medical practice and will drive innovation in data mining method, notably for efficient identification of temporal and complex niche patterns. More broadly, the work will extend the way data mining is used to create new expectations of workstation behaviour.

The Impact Of Befriending On Depression, Anxiety, Social Support And Loneliness In Older Adults Living In Residential Aged Care Facilities

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $661,872.00
    Summary
About half of people living in residential aged care facilities may have significant depression symptoms. Many residents are socially isolated in RACFs even though they are in communal living, and social isolation is a contributor to depression. We propose a trial of befriending which is emotional and social support from trained volunteers. Volunteers will be trained using Beyondblue resources and a manual developed by the investigators.

This project contributes to gaining a clearer understanding of the nature and requirements of medical emergency during mass gathering events. We will build and test a mobile real time decision support tool for improving efficiency of medical decisions to strengthen Australia's ability to manage potential health- related hazards. This project addresses research priorities of promoting and maintaining good health. It capitalizes on smart information use and will be of great benefit to mass gatherings emergency management. This project will also train highly qualified IT specialists critical to Australia's scientific and industrial development, thus increasing our competitiveness in information technology R&D.

Classification and Prediction Modelling for Financial Distress, Tax Debt and Insolvency for ATO Clients. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has clients who are not able to meet their taxation debts, resulting in revenue shortfalls for both the State and Federal Governments. Through this project, we will develop predictive models and techniques which identify client classes and clusters in the ATO client population and the defining attributes of these collections - especially those which are at high risk of incurring debt and defaulting on paying taxes. In turn, the early identification of clients in financial distress will allow the ATO to give them assistance so that they can reduce their debts and meet their financial obligations.

Integrated Decision Support for Appropriate Use of Pathology Tests in Australian General Practice: a Business Systems Perspective. The costs of pathology services in Australia are growing by at least $60 million per year. As the result of the recent "pap smear scandals", quality of pathology services has come under tight public scrutiny. Industry reports indicate the lack of analysis of the consistency of pathology tests ordering, underdeveloped models for communication between providers, and lack of alert, reminder, and follow-up systems for pathology tests. This research investigates the issues of planning, design, implementation, and monitoring of an integrated IT-based decision support system aimed at improving the dynamics and process flow in order to satisfy the demands for high quality pathology services.
