Business analytics can provide Australian organisations with a means to gain competitive advantage in the face of increasing global competition. By using the Business Analytics Success Model, Australian organisations will be able to understand better how to gain competitive advantage with business analytics. The model is an original contribution in an important area of information systems research and will contribute to university teaching and research training. The empirical data and rigorous research protocols will enhance Australia's reputation as a leader in the area of organisational use of business-analytic systems.

Combating Fake News on Social Media: From Early Detection to Intervention. The project aims to detect fake news early to minimise the negative impact of false information. This project expects to devise novel solutions to address technical challenges for detection of fake news with scarce signals. Expected outcomes of this project include a suite of data mining and machine learning models for identification of fake news from the social media stream, prediction of user propagation of false information as well as recommendation of truthful news to counteract adversarial fake news. This project should generate technologies that enhance the integrity of the online echo system and benefit media providers and online population within Australia and across the world.

Examining multi-level Information Technology (IT) project alignment in government services: the case of contracted employment services. Improved Information Technology (IT) alignment is essential for the delivery of government services within a complex public-private, inter-organisational environment. This project will investigate the extent to which well-aligned IT support systems contribute positively to the efficient and effective delivery of contracted employment services.

Create Once, Use Many Times - The Clever Use of Metadata in eGovernment and eBusiness Recordkeeping Processes in Networked Environments. Descriptive metadata, i.e. structured context-rich information about business processes, agents, and information resources, is a vital tool in managing business transactions and related information objects in complex intranet/internet environments to support eBusiness and eGovernment. Implementation of recordkeeping metadata standards is problematic as metadata generation and deployment are resource intensive and application specific. This project will develop a proof of concept prototype to demonstrate how standards-compliant metadata can be captured ONCE in particular application environments, then reused MANY times across business applications and in different environments. Implementation of the prototype in a test-bed site will provide a model for best practice.

An intelligent, user-sensitive portal to breast cancer knowledge online. Research indicates dissatisfaction with the quality of information provision amongst women with breast cancer and their families, particularly in rural and regional areas. Information and decision-support needs vary depending on disease stage, education, age, location, and ethnicity. Customised, in-time information access is critically important to BreastCare Victoria and the Breast Cancer Action Group as it impacts significantly on health and life-style decisions. This joint project analyses user needs, assesses and describes resources in user-sensitive ways, and designs and prototypes an intelligent portal that provides differentiated access to breast cancer resources online. It also advances general understandings of intelligent information provision.

Trust and Technology: Building archival systems for Indigenous oral memory. Although oral memory is highly valued by Indigenous people, to date there has been no extensive effort by Australian archival services to discover how to capture it and make it accessible to the relevant communities. Supported by the Public Record Office of Victoria and Koorie partners, this project will undertake an extensive analysis of Indigenous needs in order to develop trust and understanding of key issues such as access to archives, intellectual property and authenticity. Archival techniques and information technology will then be used to build a prototype of a trusted archival system for oral Indigenous memory, emphasising preservation and access.

Investigation of New Physics via matter-antimatter asymmetries. The universal matter-antimatter asymmetry and the existence of dark matter imply that new fundamental physics must exist. The universal matter-antimatter asymmetry and the existence of dark matter imply that new fundamental physics must exist. Recent anomalous results provide evidence that the nature of new physics can be discovered by observing B-meson decays. The project aims to do this with the Belle II experiment in Japan. Discovering new physics would be a substantial scientific discovery leading to a paradigm change in Fundamental Physics. In the process of making the measurements we will develop and enhance international collaborations, develop new techniques for machine-learning and create innovative work-flow software. This will enhance the international reputation of Australian Universities leading to increased exports of Australian education.
