A High-Throughput Neutron Spectrometer for The Study of Atomic and Molecular Motion at ANSTO. Neutron scattering enables new science across a broad range of disciplines, and for this reason it is undergoing major expansion in the USA, Europe, Japan and Australia. Various diffactometers and spectrometers have recently been built at ANSTO, but an instrumental option for a high-throughput cross-discipline spectroscopy is urgently needed. Fortunately, it is fairly straightforward to add this type of option to an existing spectrometer that will broaden its user-base from specialised applications in physics to more general applications in physics, chemistry, materials-science and biology. This additional option provides a totally new way for Australian scientists to study atomic and molecular motions.

    Summary
Understanding how atomic-scale boundary conditions define the interaction of light with matter. Scientists are trying to mimic nature's ability to grow crystals into useful shapes. This project will measure the arrangement of atoms in a nanoparticle and see how this arrangement affects its colour. It will allow us to grow nanoparticles of the shape and colour we require for applications in medicine, sensing and electronics.

The facets of a metal nanocrystal comprise just a few atoms, which are pivotal to its growth and properties. This project aims to develop methods to measure the location and stability of these atoms to understand the factors controlling their assembly and to understand their impact on the properties of the nanocrystal. It plans to correlate atomic structure and corresponding optical excitations with unprecedented spatial and energy resolution. Combining these advances, the project aims to relate nanofacet chemistry, structure, stability and optical excitations to deliver a new understanding of optical properties and their control.

Atomic structures are determined by measuring how they scatter radiation. However half of the necessary information, the crystallographic phase, cannot be measured from the scattered intensity. For a century the only option has been to deduce the phase via the statistical analysis of thousands of intensity measurements. This project aims to develop a method to determine atomic structures from the direct observation of phase. From a handful of observations and no formal measurements, atoms can be located with picometre precision. It is predicted that this method will be direct, rapid and unequivocal, sensitive to light atoms and applicable to nanostructures, which will represent a paradigm shift in crystallography.

Ultrafast science facility: manipulating and probing matter on femtosecond timescales with microscopic resolution: Knowledge of dynamics that occur on femtosecond timescales is essential for a detailed understanding of many important processes in physics, chemistry and biology. This facility will enable unprecedented insight into the mechanisms driving such processes through complementary capabilities to manipulate and probe matter on femtosecond time scales at microscopic resolution. Such processes include photosynthetic energy transfer, efficient operation of organic electronics, redox reactions in biological systems and the manipulation of material properties by intense femtosecond-laser pulses. The unique capabilities of this facility will also allow the development of novel device structures and the limits of the characterisation techniques to be pushed.

Multidimensional Coherent Spectroscopy of Strongly Correlated Materials. By applying new types of spectroscopy, this project aims to address the gaps in our understanding of how remarkable macroscopic properties, such as superconductivity, emerge from the fundamental interactions in strongly correlated electron materials. This project will combine theory and experiment to develop a pathway by which multidimensional coherent spectroscopy can disentangle the competing interactions that make these materials so complex, but also potentially useful. By delivering an understanding of the interplay between different microscopic processes, the project will make it more feasible to control them. This will allow for the design new controllable quantum materials that can be the basis for future technologies.
