Developing an Essential Research Platform for the Molecular Engineering of Photosystem II. A Buddhist challenge to Western conceptions of logic. This project aims to advance and defend a theory about the nature of logic and rationality. The project will draw on Buddhist logic texts and demonstrate their relevance to contemporary Western debates about the nature of logic. 'Trading' Women's Rights in Transitions: Designing Diplomatic Interventions in Afghanistan and Myanmar. This project aims to examine the link between diplomatic negotiations and their impact on the shifting status of women during times of deep political change. It will assess three key areas of international diplomatic negotiations around peace agreements, aid, and security sector reform and assess how these negotiations affected women's status on the ground. The role of the innate immune response in the asymptomatic nature of viral infections in bats. Bats are natural reservoirs to a variety of viruses, including many that are lethal in humans and other mammals. This project will generate fundamental information on the mechanisms involved in the asymptomatic nature of viral infections in bats and contribute towards the development of new antiviral strategies for other susceptible species.
The high conflict post-divorce shared-time family. Since the 2006 family law reforms encouraging shared-time parenting after separation, Australia has seen a marked increase in shared-time parenting where parents are in high conflict, and even where there are safety concerns. This project will examine how the children fare under shared-time parenting where their parents remain in conflict.
Changing your mind by changing your brain: An interventionist perspective on cognitive neuroscience. Functional neuroimaging provides a tremendous amount of information about the brain, but what it shows about the mind is less clear. Addressing this fundamental philosophical question requires developing a detailed account of theory-testing in cognitive neuroscience. Health and sustainability: Australia in a global context. Sustainable population health in Australia is threatened by emerging global and domestic forces, including rising costs of energy and food, linked with climate change and migration. Domestic factors include a growing, ageing population. Better understanding of these forces will enhance national capacity to respond and adapt to these risks.
