Summary
Women and the rise of contact sport. This project aims to investigate the growing visibility of women in contact sports in Australia and the multiple forces that influence their participation. Expected outcomes of this project include the enhanced capacity of contact sports to include and support women's participation; it does this by engaging with policies and practices that work towards gender equality and long-term sustainability.
Governing Prostitution in the People's Republic of China. This project will generate knowledge for 'Understanding Our Region and the World', part of the National Research Priority-Safeguarding Australia. It will do so by producing the first detailed study of the governmental regulation of prostitution in present-day China. Its impact will be increased knowledge of different, local responses to the governance of prostitution businesses and practices. Muscling Up: Australian men, sexualisation and body image enhancment. Australian men are under increasing pressure to appear fit, with psychologists and others identifying body dissatisfaction, depression, and illegal supplement use as evidence of a 'crisis'. Australian girls who leave mainstream schooling. This project aims to investigate the everyday lives and imagined futures of Australian girls who leave mainstream schooling before Year 12, a group often overlooked because of a prime concern with ‘problem boys’. Following 30 girls with disrupted transitional pathways over two years enables a micro-sociological analysis of how the girls’ (dis-)connections to people, places and institutions develop over time. Analytically, it focuses on the girls’ ....Australian girls who leave mainstream schooling. This project aims to investigate the under-explored role that salon workers play in the emotional lives of their clients. It also aims to understand how salon workers might be a unique avenue for addressing pressing social issues such as family violence, mental health, and social isolation.
