This project is a multidisciplinary investigation of depression. Drawing on a wealth of biomedical data about depression, and integrating this with psychodynamic research and feminist theories of embodiment, the project will develop robust theoretical tools for understanding the impact of endemic depression on the body. How are depressive states internalised in the biochemistry, behavioural repertoires and imaginary schemata of our bodies? Focusing on pharmacology, the gut, gender, sexuality and infancy the project will (1) transform how feminists use biological data about the body and (2) expand the affective profile through which feminists have analysed depression.

The Miss Australia Quest articulated the concept of perfect white womanhood in the postwar era. Sponsored by a major charity, the Spastics League, the Quest sought to locate representatives of conventional womanhood yet who had exemplary appearance, poise and moral virtue. Bodily and moral perfection ran counter to the sponsoring organisation which dealt with the severely disabled. With competitions held throughout the Commonwealth, the finalists were designated by their state of origin. Hence both regions and then states competed alongside individuals. The broadcast of the Quest was a major television event until 1986. An analysis of the Quest allows interrogation of the role of fundraising for charity, the construction of celebrity, the nature of idealised young womanhood and interstate rivalries. Scholarly articles and a book alongside a projected exhibition at the new National Museum of Australia are anticipated.Read moreRead less

In the context of well-documented threats to the mental health and well-being of minority young people, this project will examine the experiences of two different generations of gender and sexual minority youth growing up in Australia, and the sources of support they have found most useful. Innovative contextual analysis will involve documentary and archival research alongside individual and group interviews. Through a focus on the promotion of well-being and participatory citizenship in a rapidly changing social world, the findings aim to contribute new theory concerning transitions from youth to adulthood, improved methodology for the study of marginal and sometimes hard-to-reach populations, and better quality policy and practice.Read moreRead less
Eureka's Women: An Intimate History of Sex, Class and Culture on the Victorian Goldfields. This project will be the first systematic study of the role of women in an iconic event in Australian history - the Eureka Stockade. The research will challenge the prevailing representation of Eureka as a hyper-masculine episode - male passions inflamed, male blood shed, manhood suffrage won - by providing a unique gender perspective to a familiar narrative. My hypothesis is that women were intimately and ....Eureka's Women: An Intimate History of Sex, Class and Culture on the Victorian Goldfields. My hypothesis is that women were intimately and inextricably involved in the events at Eureka, as they were more generally in the political and cultural life of the Victorian goldfields. The research findings will contribute to ongoing debates about the meaning of the Eureka story for Australian identity, citizenship and democracy.Read moreRead less

This project aims to explore how photography and film transformed understandings of human sexuality. By analysing how and why doctors and scientists shifted their attention from textual to visual evidence, the project will contribute to understandings about how images have been used historically to create medical norms and communicate scientific knowledge to broad audiences. Focusing on Germany as the international centre of early twentieth-century sex research, the project will examine how the turn to visual evidence had a transnational impact by paving the way for post-war researchers such as Kinsey, Masters and Johnson, and for a better understanding of the history of human sexuality in Australia.Read moreRead less

Of 9,689 Australian women recently surveyed nationally, 33% reported moderate or severe premenstrual symptoms (PMS). To date, there has been no detailed examination of this debilitation, or the factors associated with it. This research study will do this, helping health-care providers understand the development, experience and construction of PMS in the context of close family relationships. This will provide a framework for prevention and support programs, thereby reducing PMS, and the physical and psychological distress associated with it. This will lead to improved psychological wellbeing and quality of life for women and their families, a priority area for the ARC. Read moreRead less
Insect societies and social butterflies: natural history and sociability in the Romantic period. During the eighteenth century, the Pacific islands and New Holland replaced America as the testing ground for ideas about the state of natural man and the origins of society. In looking at Enlightenment ideas about the natural, the human, and the social, this project will help us to learn more about ourselves as the dominant species.
