    Summary
    Genetic variation in narrow leafed lupin (NLL) accessions and breeding programs. The centre of origin of a crop plant is expected to have the greatest extant genetic variation of wild relatives. Development of modern cultivars may be accompanied by a severe genetic bottleneck, whereby subsequent breeding efforts are hampered by lack of significant genetic variation within domesticated breeding material. This proposal will research the extent to which the available genetic variation in wild acces .... Genetic variation in narrow leafed lupin (NLL) accessions and breeding programs. The centre of origin of a crop plant is expected to have the greatest extant genetic variation of wild relatives. Development of modern cultivars may be accompanied by a severe genetic bottleneck, whereby subsequent breeding efforts are hampered by lack of significant genetic variation within domesticated breeding material. This proposal will research the extent to which the available genetic variation in wild accessions of the recently developed crop Lupinus angustifolius has been utilised in breeding programs around the world. Results will be applied to broaden the gene pool and improve adaptation of new cultivars in the National Lupin Improvement Program.

    Selection and deployment of browsing resistant Eucalyptus globulus and Eucalyptus nitens. Marsupial browsing is a significant problem for eucalypt plantation establishment in Australia. To date, browsing control has relied on the use of 1080 pesticide, but through political and social pressure this will cease in Tasmanian State Forests by December 2005. To develop new approaches to integrated pest management, we will explore the use of natural plant resistance to marsupial browsers. We will dete .... To date, browsing control has relied on the use of 1080 pesticide, but through political and social pressure this will cease in Tasmanian State Forests by December 2005. To develop new approaches to integrated pest management, we will explore the use of natural plant resistance to marsupial browsers. We will determine the genetic and chemical basis of seedling resistance in Eucalyptus globulus and E. nitens, and investigate the stability of resistance though tree development and across different sites.     Genetic association studies of fundamental wood fibre components in Pinus radiata resource populations. Radiata pine is Australia's premiere softwood plantation species occupying in excess of one million hectares, contributing over $18 billion to Australia's GNP and providing employment to 130,000 Australians. With a trade deficit in forest and forest products of $1.85 billion, current massive plantation establishment efforts are in train to reverse this trend. These have to be backed by researc .... We will examine the biodiversity in a vulnerable species of eucalypt, Eucalyptus argophloia. This species is under threat due to land clearing, and only 1000 trees remain in the wild. E. argophloia has great promise for plantation timber in low rainfall areas of Northern Australia. We will breed superior varieties for plantation forestry designed to cope with cl .... We will examine the biodiversity in a vulnerable species of eucalypt, Eucalyptus argophloia. This species is under threat due to land clearing, and only 1000 trees remain in the wild. E. argophloia has great promise for plantation timber in low rainfall areas of Northern Australia. We will breed superior varieties for plantation forestry designed to cope with climate change, low rainfall and salinity. This project will help to manage and preserve the species in the wild and create profitable and sustainable timber plantations on marginal lands.
