Improving School Transition By Improving Child Sleep: A Translational Randomised Trial

Summary
A successful transition to school sets a child on a path for life. A poor transition can lead to early drop out, poor peer relationships and poor emotional skills. In 2008/09, we found that a brief sleep intervention for children improved key determinants of a successful transition including social-emotional functioning and parent mental health. We now plan to see if the same intervention, delivered by school nurses, can have a similar effect.
Student retention beyond the compulsory schooling years in rural, regional and disadvantaged communities. This project will incorporate longitudinal mixed-methods study to investigate the factors that influence student retention in schooling beyond the compulsory years in rural, regional and disadvantaged communities. Research outcomes will identify best-practice educational strategies to enhance retention in such communities across Australia.
To Biochemically Trick P-Glycoprotein (Pgp) To Target Resistance Via Lysosomal Pgp

Summary
We have discovered an innovative biochemical strategy whereby our novel compounds exploit and trick a part of the detoxification machinery, that is the transporter, P-glycoprotein, to specifically kill drug resistant cancer cells. Herein, we take advantage of this biochemical mechanism to design novel and safe drugs to selectively target resistant tumours.

Summary
Classroom relations and moral order in compulsory non-academic pathways in high school and TAFE settings. All Australian states now require school students to stay at school until 17, unless employed, to promote their future participation in the economy. This project investigates whether this relatively simple solution creates new complex problems for teachers and students in their classroom relations in schools and TAFE colleges.

Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are relatively frequent major life trauma that represent significant life threatening experiences. Not surprisingly evidence suggests that MVAs represent a frequent trigger for the development of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), although studies have typically focussed upon adult survivors. Local statistics indicate a significant proportion of children will experience a MVA of sufficient severity to warrant attendance at hospital. This project is of significance because it will provide badly needed information about the prevalence and course of emotional and behavioural problems in children following exposure to a serious MVA. More broadly the study should provide valuable information on post-traumatic stress responses in children. Furthermore, it will enable us to identify the factors that place children at particular risk of developing psychological problems following a MVA. This will provide information to help design of interventions to prevent the development of PTSD and other forms of psychopathology following MVAs. Summary
This project will research the most commonly reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection Chlamydia trachomatis. Bacterial proteins which could play a role in chronic infections of humans will be investigated. Proteins will be biologically examined to determine their role during disease. This may identify proteins which could be used for diagnostic and therapeutic tools to prevent chronic Chlamydia infection (which can result in infertility and other serious conditions).

This study aims to address the learning and wellbeing needs of over 7000 predominantly low socio-economic status students in regional Australia by researching the conditions that enable refinement and extension of a successful curricular and wellbeing program. The current low educational performance of this student cohort has significant negative effects on individual employment prospects and broader national productivity. Protect from harm or lead into danger? The influence of peers in leisure activities on adolescent behaviour. When are peers a bad influence? This project will offer answers about the leisure settings that expose young people to risk and those that protect them from harm during the high school years. This research will also help identify those youth who may be especially vulnerable to negative effects of peer influence.
