Extensive environmental, health and socio-demographic data are routinely collected by various agencies throughout Australia. To date, it has been difficult to link separate databases and investigate possible associations between the different parameters within them. In this proposal we plan to link routinely collected health, environment and socio-demographic data from a number of databases. We then plan to develop tools for geo-referencing the data. Finally we plan to perform spatial analysis of the linked data, specifically investigating associations between environmental and social factors and childhood leukaemia, deliberate self harm and adverse birth outcomes. Linking separate databases and performing spatial analysis of georeferenced data will substantially improve the quality of public health surveillance and research in NSW. In addition, it will enable more detailed analysis of the effects of environmental exposures on health, using routine data.Read moreRead less
Adaptive capabilities in the elderly during extreme heat events in South Australia. This study, using first hand accounts of experiences and perceptions of the extreme heat event of 2009 in South Australia, will provide a valuable insight into the heat adaptive capability of the ageing population, factors affecting susceptibility, and ways to curb the predicted increase in often life-threatening heat exacerbated illnesses, many of which require extended hospital stays. It is envisaged that findings will help inform health policy and contribute to the formulation of a National Heatwave Response plan. Study findings will be disseminated widely at government (state and federal), non-government, and community levels and will help to raise the awareness of heat exacerbated illness in general.Read moreRead less
Novel water treatment technologies for minimisation of bromide and iodide in drinking water. This project will develop innovative new water treatment processes to selectively remove bromide and iodide from potable source waters. The project promotes Australia as a leader in water treatment technology. Successful outcomes will have excellent potential for international commercialisation by spin-off companies and will provide economic benefits and prestige locally. Economic benefits include lower costs to water utilities through the availability of improved technology for treatment of marginal quality water supplies and improved ability to comply with water quality guidelines. Public perception and confidence in water supply quality will be enhanced, due to reduction in taste and odour issues and disinfection by-products. Read moreRead less

This project aims to develop herbicides by evaluating, isolating and identifying novel natural compounds present in a range of weeds and crop plants.
The outcomes will be reduced herbicide inputs, and the development of a new group of natural herbicides to counteract the threat imposed by the development of herbicide resistance.

Australia is one of the driest continents and re-use of water/wastewater has been an urgent issue. Photoelectrocatalytic oxidation processes based on nanostructured TiO2 electrode are able to mineralize common aquatic organic and microbial pollutants. The proposed technology has the advantages of strong oxidation power and cheap production cost, and it is chemically stable, robust under UV illumination, and most importantly, environmentally friendly. The success of the project can place Australia in a leading position of developing cutting-edge TiO2 nano-material-based photoelectrochemical technologies for environmental wastewater treatment and drinking water disinfection. There is considerable evidence to suggest that wood smoke pollution represents a serious health threat. This project will provide valuable information about the relative effectiveness of social marketing and technology-based interventions to reduce wood smoke pollution, and how these interventions may be combined to maximise their impact. The resulting improvements in air quality may produce substantial health benefits for the residents of Australian communities that depend heavily on wood as a domestic heating fuel during winter months. Disinfectant management and disinfection by-products are of concern to water utilities, water treatment researchers and consumers worldwide. The project will make a world-class contribution to these issues, through use of state-of-the-art equipment and developed technologies. Sophisticated characterization of disinfection by-product precursors, especially poorly defined less volatile species, will provide insights into the relationship between their chemical structures and behaviour in treatment processes, benefiting all water utilities. The project will inform new drinking water guidelines and assist water utilities to balance the competing requirements of maintaining effective pathogen barriers versus disinfection by-product control.Read moreRead less

Climate shifts have led to water supply shortages in many areas of Australia, both in rural and remote regions and in cities. To ease water shortages, transportation of water over long distances is becoming increasingly necessary. A major impediment to transfer of water through long mains is management of the disinfectant: most disinfectants decay too rapidly, leaving consumers at risk of pathogen exposure. Chloramination, the most viable disinfection technology for this purpose, suffers from a process called nitrification which accelerates disinfectant decay. In this project, we are developing an innovative, patented process to prevent nitrification, which will allow safe and effective disinfection of water supplies in long pipelines.Read moreRead less

Air pollution is estimated to cause 2400 deaths annually in Australia with an associated cost to the community of $17.2 billion. The outcomes of this project will enable an improved understanding of the association between air pollution and mortality in Australia, thereby allowing government, public health authorities, and regulatory agencies to implement better air pollution standards and provide more informed advice to the public on the necessity of avoiding exposure to air pollutants. These two outcomes are particularly important given Australia's ageing population and the fact that the elderly are among those most susceptible to harm from air pollution exposure.Read moreRead less
