Work-related Road Traffic Injury: Managing The Risk

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $508,943.00
    Summary
Almost one third of registered motor vehicles in Australia are used for work purposes, the implications of this research namely, estimating the magnitude and identifying organisational determinants associated with work-related road traffic injury are substantial. Interventions arising from the findings of this research will contribute significantly to reductions in work-related road traffic injury and will support the National Road Safety Strategy target of a 30% reduction in serious injuries by .... The Brain Mechanisms For Learned Safety

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $559,428.00
    Summary
A core feature of clinical anxiety is the inability to learn about safety and suppress fear. Impaired safety learning underpins excessive fear responding, overgeneralisation of fear, as well as treatment resistance in clinical anxiety. Very little is known about the brain mechanisms for learned safety. This project maps and manipulates these mechanisms to lay the basic science foundation for the next generation of treatments of anxiety.

Delivering Advanced Electrode Materials To The Clinic

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $702,604.00
    Summary
This research will develop improved electrodes for interfacing neural tissue by combining the expertise of materials scientists and electrophysiologists with medical bionics researchers. This work is expected to deliver improved bionic devices to the clinic in order to treat a variety of disorders from blindness to the control of motor tremor in Parkinson's disease.

Neonatal Cranial Ultrasound: Safety, Knowledge And Practice Of Prolonged Or Repeated Exposure To Acoustic Waves

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $255,055.00
    Summary
Ultrasound is routinely used for diagnosis of brain lesions amongst newborns. Animal studies have shown that ultrasound can sometimes be harmful to the brain. We currently have very little information on the characteristics of neonatal cranial scans. This project will investigate current knowledge of safety and training via a nationwide survey, analyse the elements of 'typical' scans and measure brain surface heating after ultrasound amongst neonates.

Dietary Intake Of Highly Processed Foods As A Contributor To Type 1 Diabetes

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $558,953.00
    Summary
Modern food processing imparts desirable functional properties such as emulsification and longer shelf life. These biochemical modifications in our food may cause the body to turn on itself and destroy the cells which produce the sugar storage hormone insulin. This is important for survival and characterizes childhood onset diabetes and can also be seen in type 2 diabetes. This research will test some dietary and pharmaceutical interventions to slow the development of diabetes.

Near Real-time Identification Of Patient Safety Incidents Reported By Health Professionals.

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $324,174.00
    Summary
Ten percent of admissions to Australian hospitals are associated with harm to patients. Reporting of patient safety incidents is now widespread. Current methods, which rely upon humans to manually review incident reports, do not permit timely detection of safety problems and can no longer keep up with the growing volume. This study will be the first internationally to automate the monitoring of incident reports. The outcomes have broad and immediate potential to improve the monitoring of inciden .... This study will be the first internationally to automate the monitoring of incident reports. A New Genomic Frontier For Foodborne Disease Investigation In Australia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $750,520.00
    Summary
Foodborne diseases caused by bacteria such as Salmonella and Campylobacter are a huge public health problem, both in Australia and globally. Current methods used to investigate foodborne disease may not be sensitive enough to track foodborne outbreaks, and may not even detect them in the first place. We propose using cutting-edge molecular techniques to investigate foodborne outbreaks, and we think that using these methods will enable outbreaks to be interrupted at a much earlier stage.

Climate Change Impacts On Workplace Heat Extremes: Health Risk Estimates And Adaptive Options

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $741,938.00
    Summary
Global warming will bring more hot (and extremely hot) days as Australia warms within the projected range of 2-4oC by 2070. Working in the heat is uncomfortable and requires rest breaks, yet pressure to keep working risks overheating and serious health problems. We will study the current effects on health and productivity on heat exposed workers, and model future trends in likely impacts under climate change in 8 (urban and rural) regions, with and without adaptive health protection strategies.

Development Of 'omics-based Approaches To Investigate Labelling Accuracy And Legality Of Herbal Medicine In Australia

    Funder
National Health and Medical Research Council
    Funding Amount
    $494,883.00
    Summary
Herbal medicines such as tradition Chinese medicine (TCM) are popular across Australia, but little has been done to ensure they are accurately labeled, don’t contain adulterants and that ingredients are legal. Preliminary work suggests that TCM, even those approved by regulators, contain pharmaceuticals and illegal species. Our research will develop a new two-pronged DNA and toxicological auditing toolkit with the aim of providing accurate information on herbal medicines for sale in Australia.
