Pedestrian and cyclist fatalities are a major road safety problem, accounting for a third of road fatalities at an estimated cost of $2.5 billion/year. Late recognition of pedestrians and cyclist by drivers is the main reason for these collisions. By focusing on the safety of one of the most vulnerable road user groups the safety gains will benefit all road users. New urban road designs will be evaluated using Australia's first cycling simulator.

This project develops new methods to analyse road traffic accident rates, aiming to identify accident black spots and to develop an evidence base for future road design and road safety management. These methods can be applied to other types of events on a network of roads, railways, rivers, electrical wires, communication networks or airline routes.
