This project aims to develop a flexible mathematical framework for internet resource allocation among competing demands by exploiting application context to allocate resources more efficiently. The project will extend an existing framework which allocates resources independently at each time period, by considering benefits over periods of time relevant to users. The expected outcome of this project is a systematic method for designing next-generation congestion-avoidance protocols that anticipate and accommodate different types of demand. This project will provide significant benefits including better provision of internet services and new ways to help combat traffic congestion, bringing benefits to both the environment and society.

Crowd tracking and visual analytics for rapidly deployable imaging devices. This project aims to develop visual analytics technology that adds machine intelligence to a rapidly deployable time-lapse imaging platform. Such devices can operate on solar and wind power, and be remotely programmed (via a cellular network) to take photos and send them to a server at given times. This project, which focuses on monitoring crowds of objects of interest, is expected to introduce “smart” imaging platforms that could be triggered and shoot high-quality photographs when “events of interest” occur. This project could make Australia both a world leader in video analytics and secure through on-line threat detection, and improve traffic control and agriculture.

Information Fusion for Tracking Objects in Large-Scale Sensor Network. This project aims to develop a mathematical framework to combine multi-modal information coming from multiple sensors. These mobile sensors will be spatially distributed over a large-scale area for the purpose of multi-object tracking. The main application of this framework is for cooperative perception for intelligent decision making. Expected outcomes include a novel technique to integrate receiving information from multiple mobile agents (e.g. vehicle) to enhance their ability to anticipate situations in dynamic environments and to act effectively to enhance safety. This should provide benefits for the development of cooperative autonomous driving to enhance road safety.

Phase transitions in stochastic systems. This project aims to understand models of physical and biological phenomena in the presence of uncertainty/randomness. Such models often exhibit phase transitions if a variable defining the model is modified. For example, a population explosion can occur if the average number of offspring per individual is larger than one, while macroscopic defects can occur in a material if the density of microscopic defects is larger than some threshold. Such models often exhibit phase transitions if a variable defining the model is modified. For example, a population explosion can occur if the average number of offspring per individual is larger than one, while macroscopic defects can occur in a material if the density of microscopic defects is larger than some threshold. This research could lead to strategies for directing physical and biological systems towards preferred states or phases, and better prediction of adverse events such as fracturing of Antarctic sea ice.
